English to Hungarian: Ephemeral Journalism: News Distribution Through Instagram Stories General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - English
Social media are increasingly integrated into media routines as channels to gain access, verify and spread information. Likewise, as mobile news consumption is standardized, the media experiment with native formats for these platforms. This study analyzes how the media use Instagram Stories, to identify the strategies that they apply, as well as the adaptation and innovation features on this platform. A content analysis was conducted from a sample of 17 online media that use Instagram Stories, both legacy and digital native. The results show an upward potential in ephemeral news production, one that is increasingly developed and unique.
Over the last few decades, journalism has undergone a major restructuring (Casero-Ripollés et al., 2016) caused by the phenomenon of digitalization and media convergence (Jenkins, 2006). The rise of the Web and constant technological innovations have led to a new scenario for media outlets, where mobile, networked, and wearable media platforms are featuring “a host of new and innovative content and communication capabilities” (Pavlik et al., 2019, p. 191).
In this technology-driven media environment, professional journalistic norms and daily practices are being redefined (Spyridou et al., 2013; Van Der Haak et al., 2012), together with the organization and structure of newsrooms, the content of news, and the relationships between journalists, their readers (Pavlik, 2000), and their sources (Fisher, 2018). The limits between production and reception of contents have become blurred (Bruns, 2005; Loosen, 2015; Ross, 2012; Sundet & Ytreberg, 2009) as users hold the power not only to select, distribute, and interpret the events (Hermida, 2012) but also to take part in the news production (Kammer, 2013). Although many journalists are reluctant to give audiences a key role in the news-making process (Lewis, 2015) and some newsrooms show a lack of interest in collaborating with the public (Porlezza, 2019), the new media culture requires to shift from a newsroom-centricity perspective (Wahl-Jorgensen, 2009) to a more networked one (Hermida et al., 2014), in which media professionals and their audiences are expected to co-create and work together (Deuze & Witschge, 2018).

Hungarian to English: A világ népesedési folyamatai
2100-ra várhatóan a világ jelenlegi 191 szuverén államából 151-ben a népesség fenntartásához szükséges szint alá esik a termékenység.
Translation - English During the 21st century, the growth of world population is expected to come to a halt: the population of developed countries will mostly decline and generally ageing strongly, while the proportion of the developing countries – especially in sub-Saharan Africa and in Islam and Arab populations – may increase within the world population. The process raises questions about the sustainability of pension systems, and predicts the shrinkage and eventual collapse of them. Furthermore, it may trigger migration flows leading to civilizational and cultural coexistence problems. The emergence of the society of impoverished and solitary elderly people is expected worldwide, while the issue of immigration from Islamic countries might become an increasingly polarizing factor politically.
World population continues to grow, although at a slower rate, and is expected to exceed 8 billion by the next decade. The reason of the continuous growth is that the decrease in the number of children follows the decrease in mortality with a certain time lag worldwide: the number of elderly people increases due to longer life expectancy, followed only slightly later by the decrease in the number of young people.
However, according to the United Nations (UN), world population growth is expected to slow down and come to a halt by the second half of the 21st century, and may even start declining thereafter. The reason is that fertility is decreasing worldwide – in half of the world population, fertility has fallen from high levels in the mid-20th century to levels just sufficient or below the level needed to sustain the population, and it is expected to further decline. According to a recent demographic projection, the world average total fertility rate (TFR) might fall to 1.66 from the current 2.4 by the end of the 21st century (Vollset et al. 2020). As well known, values below 2.1 are not sufficient to sustain the population. By the year 2100, 151 of the world’s 191 currently sovereign states are expected to have fertility below the level needed to sustain their populations. As fertility has already fallen below replacement level in many places, the population of several countries – including Japan, China and Spain – may decline to half or even less by the end of the century. Globally, the number of elderly people aged 65 and over is expected to reach 2.46 billion by 2100, surpassing the population of aged 14 and under (1.9 billion). However, the decrease in the number of young people entails a problem, because it predicts that the burden on economically active layers of society and on social welfare system will increase. This is confirmed by the ageing index (the proportion of people aged 65 and over compared to those aged 0-14) projected by the UN for 2100, that might rise from the current (2020) value of 36.7 to 129.5 in the next 80 years. The dependency ratio (the proportion of people aged 65 and over compared to those aged 15-64) reveals similarly sharp demographic changes: it is expected to increase from 14.3 to 37.7.
Hungarian to English: Közszolgálati média a közösségi hálózatok korában
Translation - English Journalistic practice has been essentially modified by digital transformation and the expansion of social networks, and it is facing challenges concerning its basic operation and limits. The collapse of traditional business models, the changes in media use and news consumption habits causing challenges in reaching the youth, the increasing participation of non-professionals in news production and distribution, the effects of the logic and standards of social media platforms on journalistic work, especially the ones concerning professional and ethical policy – these are some of the circumstances determining the operation, opportunities and challenges of news media. Perhaps, traditional public service media are the ones that stand the furthest away from practices of participation and platform logics characterizing today’s media environment. What are the opportunities of public service media for fulfilling their commitment of authentically and objectively informing citizens, including the youth, about public affairs? The aim of this study is to picture the boundary work of journalism currently underway by reviewing the phenomena emerging on the border of journalism and social media. Additionally, the study attempts to answer the question of what a successful social media strategy looks like in public service media by presenting the social media activities of “tagesschau”, the newsmagazine of ARD, a German public service channel.
