Russian to English: Ministry description for "Safe Haven", a mission to orphans in Ukraine
Translation - English The purpose of our ministry is to help orphaned children after they have graduated from the orphanage. According to statistics, this category of society is the least protected of all (the younger children are cared for by the government or there’s still a chance that they can be adopted). According to statistics, 90% of orphanage graduates are future druggies, prostitutes, drug dealers, prisoners, and suicide victims. Only 10% of these children manage to build their lives differently than the others.
Every year in the spring and fall, we put on camps in the orphanage in order to get to know the children, build relationships, and to give them a chance to hear the Gospel. In the end of spring, we choose a few children who would like to live with us. We choose according to these principals: 1) those who have repented during camp 2) those who are interested in knowing more about God but are still not sure 3) those who simply have nowhere else to go. Often, God sorts out the children for us, no matter what our personal preferences were.
In June, we bring the children into our home for a two year term. Over the span of these two years, they live with us as though they were our own children. They go to church with us and attend small groups which we prepare for them. They learn to cook and clean and do work around the house; they learn about relationships and how to relate to people. In short, they learn about everything they didn’t learn in their 17 years at the orphanage. The children also study in a college or university. When their two years are up, Bogdan and I try to help them start a new and independent life outside of our home; we try to help them find work, a place to live, and a way to continue studying. Along with that, they can always return to us for advice and help, just as our own children would.
Usually we all gather together on the holidays. There’s not much space, but that makes it all the more memorable both for the children and for Bogdan and I. This year on my and Bogdan’s birthday, three “generations” of our children joined us…35 people in all! For Bogdan and I, this is not just a ministry that we get paid for, it is our life. First of all, it is what God told us to do – to care for the orphans; secondly, this is a gift God has given us – to love grown children who are not our own, to tell them about God, about hope, about love, and to teach them to love God and each other. This is probably the hardest ministry I know…and yet the most blessed.
The greatest joy for us is when the children come to know Christ and their lives change. Up to this point, 30 children have lived with us; exactly half are believers. Many of them already have their own families and children. We pray that God would give Bogdan and me strength to do His work, as we see the fruit and value of this work.
