Then our job demands more flexibility i think. Summer, winter, autumn, spring... translation jobs continues...
I have many ''good payer'' customers. I must to demonstrate my fidelity to my job, my customers and naturally myself too.
I like (love) to working on Taurus Mountains in my village on Summer...
Naturally via wifi and my good old laptop... Under the apple and cherry trees

...or else what is the point of going on holiday if not to switch off completely and have a break from the computer? I might as well stay at home working and save the money. I do take my BlackBerry though as I like to reply to client emails in person, wherever possible, rather than set an out-of-office reply. It also means I can accept work to do when I get back.

I go on holiday so rarely that it would be really unfair to my children and my husband to work there too!
Even though it is difficult to let go, I try to do it every year, and it does me good..

Although I normally aim not to switch it on. I'll have it with me so I can look at potential incoming work or deal with issues that have arisen. I won't actually aim to work over the holiday.
I have the phone to receive e-mail and work out whether I need to dig the laptop out. Normally I don't have to but it's good to have it there. It's also useful for showing the children the odd DVD!

when I visit my mother it is a sort of holiday (near the seaside), but I spend a lot of time there, and without working the following month would be tragic. SO I take it with me, but when I go on a proper holiday, which means 1 week just to relax, well I forget I have one

If I went on holidays in a very sunny place for one week (if only!), I'd leave my laptop at home. No way.
On the other hand, another type of holiday (by my parents for example, or by some friends) could require me to take my laptop, especially during the busiest periods.

I voted "I try not to..." as that's closest to the truth, but that makes it sound a bit too reluctant. Sometimes I consciously leave the laptop at home in order to have a complete break and have time to spend with others. Sometimes I take it with me because I want to be available to my clients or because I have work that I want to get done.

for reasons of comfort and security, but I don't really mind doing so on protracted holidays (what's the point of hotel rooms with wifi, anyway?) Besides, it's handy for unloading digital images.
To work with it on holidays, no. But to stay in touch just in case, it's handy. On out-of-town conferences, it goes with me.

If I had a laptop, I would use it in case of emergency, but defintely not during my holidays when I am supposed to relax and stop working.

I let my regular clients know I'll be away on holidays and unreachable with 5 weeks' notice and then send a reminder one week before I leave (not to mention, I include a footnote on every e-mail).
I also leave the autoresponder on in case I'm contacted by a potential new client or an existing client forgets that I'm away.
So, starting from day 1, I turn the computer off, pack my bags and kiss the computer goodbye. I do check my personal e-mail regularly, but my business... Even if I'm on holidays, I need to be able to answer the potential emails my clients send me. It's a show of seriousness or workalcoholism some might say.....:))
If I can't take my laptop, i use my phone to check anything happening!

By taking the computer and working part time, I can take longer trips. For example, next year I'm probably going to visit various friends in California. If I don't take the computer, it will have to be a four or five day trip - hardly worth the travel time and expense. But by taking the computer, I can explore the west for a couple of weeks.

Although I don't consider myself to be a workaholic (only others do that ) I need to take my laptop with me no matter where I'm going. Not only as not to miss a (potential and paid) job, but also because charity/non-profit organizations need help any time of the year.
There's food and clothes drives to be organized, fund raising for someone in need of medical care/surgery or just plain a feature added to their websit... I always try to set some time aside for these "jobs", which might not always be possible. Still, even though there is no money in it, I have volunteered to help them with all I'm able to do and with as much time as I can spare - vacation or not. A promise is a promise is a promise.
