When it breaks down Jan 17, 2011

But the problem is that it doesn't break down that easy. I still use a 9 year old computer (XP) with a 256 Mb memory (which I upgraded to 512 Mb) and with a 67 GB of memory. And I also have a Windows Me back from 2000 which is covered with dust on the shelf.

I changed it only once so far, and the old one had been on duty for more than 5 years. But there's no rule, I will change it again either when it becomes too slow, or when it breaks down and can't be fixed.

When I need to. I replaced my laptop about 2 months ago. The machine prior to that was a cheap one (and in hindsight a mistake) which only lasted about 18 months. The one before that was about four and a half years.

I replace them when they start making me nervous (more frequent crashes) or frustrated (slooooooow). Hopefully this new top-of-the-range one will see me through a few years yet.

When it breaks down Jan 17, 2011

2 years ago, my computer suddenly crashed although it had been working perfectly. So I made a careful choice of a new one. Recently I ask a repairman to check it periodically to use it for years. I woulld like to take good care of a very important partner(computer) like Gianluca and Yasutomo

Like most people, every 3-4 years Jan 17, 2011

I think I'm on my seventh computer. I got my first one in 1991.

I have kept the old files each time I upgraded, so I now have about 1.5 million.

Depends on... Jan 17, 2011

Depends on... I think computer and translator are a team. If computer works good, it can be life/survive 8-10 years...

But I have 4 computers at home. 2 desktop, 2 laptop/notbook...

So, my computers are working rotational. At home music from netbook, CAT tools and other translation works from desktop (6 GB RAM)... (other desktop is for force major purposes).

Translating by travels and ''nature works'' i use my laptop...

We are very happy toget

I voted when it breaks down... Jan 17, 2011

But in fact this has never happened, touch wood. My IT-man took over and set up a new computer three or four years ago.

As long as all my programs work, I keep going with the same computer. It takes AGES to reinstall them and reinstate all my personal settings, so it is simply not worth the hassle unless there is some major advantage too.

I have to make sure I can handle the files clients send, but apart from that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it !!

I'm still on my first one at the moment (as I started just over 2 years ago) and I hope it will keep going for a while yet!

Well, I only have one desktop and one laptop, but they, too, take turns in doing the work. Hopefully they will take their time in breaking dowm.

For tax reasons Jan 17, 2011

I can write one off every three years, but otherwise I would probably upgrade every two years if I could afford it - I'm at the 28 month point right now and things are noticeably slower and less efficient.

I can't even remember when I started using a computer for my work, and I have no idea how many times I've changed my work computer(s)...
