Either a very good April Fool\'s Day joke... or really bad news for translators. : )

Its success went even beyond ProZ, since I spotted a copycat at work at http://www.accessnewage.com/articles/humor/microyok.htm
Of course they used a different title (Microsoft Bids to Acquire Catholic Church), ah the infamous camouflage!

You couldn\'t devise anything worse. I still get shivers down my spine... Now I can\'t sleep, my right eye\'s twitching, I hear noises everywhere and when I close my eyes I see B.G.\'s head in flames laughing like a madman while hammering down an iMac. Need a shrink, now. You get a price too: the Orson Welles of the Year :-O aaaaaaargh!

M$ invasion of translation business has already begun. After they invested in Trados (one of the worst software ripoffs, save M$ Office), they started to require that translators use that...thing. Benefits for M$: -force selling a 200% useless product (as usual) -paying less for so-called \"pre-translated\" strings to the translator (which in fact require twice more work from the translator to make a decent translation)

Also, M$ started its invasion into english language itself. Heard about M$ Dictionary of Universal(!) English? As in software, M$ is trying to impose its own twisted \"standards\".
One last word for TAYFUN TORUNOGLU, who is grateful for Windows UI: the graphical UI existed on Macintosh & Amiga many years before M$ copied it. The only new thing brought by M$ to the UI was that wonderful blue screen \"fatal error at xxxx\"

I think hgtrad was referring to the Microsoft Encarta \"World English Dictionary\" (published about 3-4 years ago). | |
