I don't attend courses per se but I often visit various conferences (2-3 times a year). I also plan to visit a major translation-related exhibition in 2011.

There's a lot more to this profession than just the translating itself: one can attend trainings on marketing, bookkeeping, project management, glossary management, research techniques, the changing legal requirements in certain areas of translation (medical, courtroom, etc.), techniques and laws related to interpreting (for those interested in that field), etc.

As for your flippant comment about CAT software, you might want to get your facts straight. Trados was a translation agency for years before it began developing software, and the developer of Wordfast had been a translator for several decades by the time he got into CAT development. It is precisely translators who are most involved in developing such tools.
