Does anyone know if it is possible to edit the spell check dictionaries that come with Word or OpenOffice.
I am not talking about editing the custom dictionary that the user creates by adding new words and can then edit to remove any misspelt words.
I am thinking more of removing words that are similarly spelt to other words, but which I am much less likely to use in day-to-day work. For example: there is a common misspelling of "public" that does not get caught by spe... See more

I am thinking more of removing words that are similarly spelt to other words, but which I am much less likely to use in day-to-day work. For example: there is a common misspelling of "public" that does not get caught by spellcheckers because it is also a word and is potentially highly embarassing if missed.
Could I remove this and other similar entries from my dictionary or in some way suppress them?

Try "Auto Correct" in "Tools" and fill in the instruction that each time you type the word, it is automatically replaced with "public". You merely type the word that you want to be automatically corrected in one space and then type the word that you wish it to be converted to in a second space. I've just tried it on an old version of Microsoft Word (Office 97) and it worked. So I assume it'll work on any later versions.

Of course it will result in that word always being changed to"public". If by chance you want to actually use that word and need to avoid the change, just go one space more with the spacebar and go back with the left arrow to delete the letter "l".
