I have used Babylon for years for easy access to standard dictionaries. But I dislike the company's hard sell tactics. In addition, recently the application regularly "disappears", forcing me to contact Babylon and endure yet more hard selling. (Has anyone else had this experience..
So I recently downloaded GoldenDict, which can read Babylon dgl files I have on my computer. Excellent: but unfortunately it seems to cause problems with IntelliWebSearch, my other great tool.

So does anyone have any experience of alternative software to Babylon and which (hopefully) can read Babylon dictionary files.. Or even software that can't: I am so fed up with Babylon that I am prepared to buy the same dictionaries again.. ▲ Collapse
Hi,
Did you try disabling the scan pop-up function in GoldenDict. I think that's the one which makes problem with IntelliWebSearch.
I went exactly the same way as you, I had been using Babylon for a long time and looked then for an alternative. Goldendict was the one I chose after disabling the popup (I am a IWS user too).

Hi Guillaume. Thanks for your reply. I am pretty sure that I did disable the popup, but there still seems to be a conflict. As long as I have GoldenDict (which is a great application) the string fails to appear in the IWS search box - and copy and paste fails too. But in the light of your comments I will have another go.
Best Wishes,

David, let us know if your second attempt to disable the popup allows GoldenDict to work. Inquiring minds want to know.
The only way I ever got rid of Babylon's hard-sell tactics and other annoying interferences was when I got a new computer and refused to let Babylon in the door....

Hi Catherine. Sorry for the late reply. The answer is that there still seems to be a conflict between GoldenDict and IWS.
On this business of Babylon "disappearing": when I contacted the Babylon technical people, they seemed to think that the disappearance of Babylon was due to an earlier version of Babylon on my computer, and uninstalled it. But a week later - same problem. I can't explain this other than by assuming that they put a bug in your computer. If so, it works: although I find B... See more Hi Catherine. But a week later - same problem. I can't explain this other than by assuming that they put a bug in your computer. If so, it works: although I find Babylon one of the worst outfits around for hard selling and annoyance, the software is effective - and so far even GoldenDict doesn't give me a real alternative. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Dictionary software: Babylon and alternatives Wordfast Pro | Translation Memory Software for Any Platform
