'Who was that young blonde you were deep in conversation with?' Fred asked me in the car on the way home. She was driving because she hadn't had much to drink and I had had quite a lot.
'I've no idea,' I said. 'She told me her name, twice in fact, but I Couldn't make it out. I didn't hear a word she was saying. The noise ...
'It's all the concrete - it makes the sound reverberate.'
'I thought she might be one of your customers.'
'No, I've never seen her before. What did you think of the exhibition?'
'Drab. Boring. Anybody with a digital camera could take those pictures. But why bother?'
'I thought they had a kind of interesting... sadness.'
That is a condensed account of our conversation, which actually went something like this:
'Who was that young woman you were deep in conversation with?
'What?'
'You were deep in conversation with a young blonde.'
'I didn't see Ron. Was he there?'
'Not Ron. The blonde woman you were talking to, who was she?'
I've no idea. She told me her name, twice in fact, but I didn't make it out. I didn't hear a word she was saying. The noise...'
'It's all the concrete.'
'There's nothing wrong with the heating, in fact it's always too bloody hot for my liking.'
'No, concrete. The walls, the floor. It makes the sound reverberate.'
'Oh . . .'
(Pause.)
'What did you think of the exhibition?'
'I thought she might be one of your customers.'
'Who?'
'The Young blonde woman.'
'Oh. No, I've never seen her before. What did you think of the exhibition?'
'What?'
'The exhibition - what did you think?'

I thought they had a kind of interesting ... sadness.
'Can badness be interesting?'
'Sadness, an interesting sadness. Are you wearing your hearing aid, darling?'
'Of course I am.'
'It doesn't seem to be working very well.'
She was absolutely right. I tapped the earpiece in my right car with my fingernail and got a dull dead sound. The battery had packed up and I hadn't noticed. I don't know at what point in the evening it happened. Maybe that was why I didn't hear what the blonde woman was saying, though I don't think so. I think it must have happened when I went to the Gents, which was after she left. It was quiet in there, and I wouldn't have registered the loss of
volume, or I would have attributed it to the quietness of the Gents compared to the cacophony in the gallery, and when I went back to the party I didn't even attempt to have a conversation with anybody but pretended to be interested in the pictures, which were in fact not at all interesting, for their sadness or badness or any other quality, but merely banal.
'My battery's packed up,' I said. 'Shall I put a new one in? It's a bit tricky in the dark.'
'No, don't bother,' Fred said, as she often does these days. She'll come into my study, for instance, when I'm working on the computer, without wearing my hearing aid because it turns the soothing mutter of the keyboard into an intrusive clatter as loud as an old-fashioned upright Remington, and she'll say something to me which I don't hear, and I have to make a split second choice between either halting the conversation while I scrabble for my hearing aid pouch and insert the earpiece or trying to wing it without them, and usually I try to wing it, and a dialogue follows something like:
Fred: Murr murr murr.
Me: What?
Fred: Murr murr murr.
Me: (playing for time) Uh huh.
Fred: Murr murr murr.
Me: (making a guess at the content of the message) All right.
Fred: (surprised) What?
Me: What did you say?
Fred: Why did you say 'All right' if you didn't hear what I said?
Me: Let me get my hearing aid.
Fred: No, don't bother. It's not important.

"Det har jeg ingen idé om," sagde jeg. "Hun fortalte hvad hun hed to gange faktisk, men jeg kunne ikke tyde det. Jeg hørte ikke et ord af hvad hun sagde. Støjen...

Hun havde fuldstændig ret. Jeg prikkede på det højre ørestykke med min fingernegl og fremkaldte en dump, død lyd. Batteriet var fladt, og jeg havde ikke lagt mærke til det.
Jeg ved ikke, på hvilket tidspunkt i løbet af aftenen det var sket. Måske var det derfor, jeg ikke havde hørt, hvad den unge kvinde sagde, skønt jeg ikke tror, det hænger sådan sammen. Jeg tror det må være sket, medens jeg var på herretoilettet, det var efter hun var taget af sted. A network switch is a computer networking device that connects network segments.

The term commonly refers to a Network bridge that processes and routes data at the Data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. Switches that additionally process data at the Network layer (layer 3 and above) are often referred to as Layer 3 switches or Multilayer switches.

The term network switch does not generally encompass unintelligent or passive network devices such as hubs and repeaters.

The first Ethernet switch was introduced by Kalpana in 1990. [1]

As with hubs, Ethernet implementations of network switches support either 10/100 Mbit/s or 10/100/1000 Mbit/s ports Ethernet standards. Large switches may have 10 Gbit/s ports. Switches differ from hubs in that they can have ports of different speed.

The network switch, packet switch (or just switch) plays an integral part in most Ethernet local area networks or LANs. Mid-to-large sized LANs contain a number of linked managed switches. Small office, home office (SOHO) applications typically use a single switch, or an all-purpose converged device such as gateway access to small office/home office broadband services such as DSL router or cable, Wi-Fi router. In most of these cases, the end user device contains a router and components that interface to the particular physical broadband technology, as in the Linksys 8-port and 48-port devices. User devices may also include a telephone interface to VoIP.

In the context of a standard 10/100 Ethernet switch, a switch operates at the data-link layer of the OSI model to create a different collision domain per switch port. If you have 4 computers A/B/C/D on 4 switch ports, then A and B can transfer data between them as well as C and D at the same time, and they will never interfere with each others' conversations. In the case of a "hub" then they would all have to share the bandwidth, run in half-duplex and there would be collisions and retransmissions. Using a switch is called micro-segmentation. It allows you to have dedicated bandwidth on point to point connections with every computer and to therefore run in full duplex with no collisions.

[edit] Role of switches in networks

Network switch is a marketing term rather than a technical one.[citation needed] Switches may operate at one or more OSI layers, including physical, data link, network, or transport (i.e., end-to-end). A device that operates simultaneously at more than one of these layers is called a multilayer switch, although use of the term is diminishing.[citation needed]

In switches intended for commercial use, built-in or modular interfaces make it possible to connect different types of networks, for example Ethernet, Fibre Channel, ATM, and 802.11. This connectivity can be at any of the layers mentioned. While Layer 2 functionality is adequate for speed-shifting within one technology, interconnecting technologies such as Ethernet and token ring are easier at Layer 3.

Interconnection of different Layer 3 networks is done by routers. If there are any features that characterize "Layer-3 switches" as opposed to general-purpose routers, it tends to be that they are optimized, in larger switches, for high-density Ethernet connectivity.

In some service provider and other environments where there is a need for much analysis of network performance and security, switches may be connected between WAN routers as places for analytic modules. Some vendors provide firewall,[2][3] network intrusion detection,[4] and performance analysis modules that can plug into switch ports. Some of these functions may be on combined modules.[5]

In other cases, the switch is used to create a mirror image of data that can go to an external device. Since most switch port mirroring provides only one mirrored stream, network hubs can be useful for fanning out data to several read-only analyzers, such as intrusion detection systems and packet sniffers.

En netværks switch er en komponent i et computernetværk som behandler og transmitterer data i data-link laget (lag 2) i OSI modellen. Switche som i tilgift behandler data i netværks-laget (lag 3) i OSI modellen kaldes lag 3 switche eller mulitlags-switche.

Betegnelsen netværks switch omfatter i almindelighed ikke uintelligente eller passive netværksenheder såsom hubs eller repeaters.

Funktion
Som med hubs understøtter Ethernet-udgave af switche enten 10/100 Mbit/s eller 10/100/1000 Mbit/s porte efter Ethernet standard. Store switche kan have 10 Gb porte. Switche adskiller sig fra hubs i og med de kan have porte med forskellig hastighed.

I have by now 14 years of experience as a freelance translator. My language combination id EN>DA.
I know IT and have a firm knowledge of computers, hardware and software, web, localisation and networks. I also work with mechanical engineering (automotive, lifting gear, pneumatics and hydraulics, to name a few) plus medical equipment. I also know pedagogy and education, especially in online contexts. Experience
I am former head of an IT-department of University of Southern Denmark, have held two engineering positions, one with a Danish firm, Kosan Cylindric and one with an Austrian firm, Triumph Werke. I am a trained teacher and have taught literature, physics, mathematics, chemistry, English and IT.

Language and education English is my primary foreign language. My knowledge has been bolstered by education, practical usage and specific courses (Teacher training college, Cambridge Certificate for Proficiency in English, (grade A) & English studies at University of Odense, Denmark) combined with stays in the UK and US. I have a wide range of interests and knowledge within many fields. I have (of course!) a superb command of Danish.
