English to German: 9th ProZ.com Translation Contest - Entry #9562
Source text - English I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.
A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Poverty talks, too, but nobody wants to hear what it has to say.
Translation - German Ich erinnere mich einmal gelesen zu haben, manch einer benutze die Sprache, um zu verbergen, was er denke. Aus meiner Erfahrung würde ich jedoch sagen, dass sehr viel mehr sie benutzen, anstelle zu denken.
Das Gesprächsgebaren eines Geschäftsmannes sollte sich an wenigeren und einfacheren Regeln orientieren als jede andere Funktion des Tieres Mensch. Diese wären:
Hab etwas zu sagen.
Sag es.
Hör auf zu reden.
Anzufangen, bevor man weiß, was man sagen möchte, und weiter zu reden, nachdem man es gesagt hat, bringt einen Händler vors Gericht oder ins Armenhaus, und Ersteres ist auch nur eine Abkürzung zu Letzterem. Ich unterhalte hier eine Rechtsabteilung und die kostet eine Menge Geld, aber sie soll mich vom Gericht fernhalten.
Wenn du ein Mädchen besuchst oder dich nach dem Essen mit Freunden unterhältst, ist es gut und schön, das Gespräch wie einen Sonntagsausflug laufen zu lassen, mit Pausen zum Blumenpflücken. Aber im Büro sollten deine Sätze die kürzestmögliche Entfernung zwischen zwei Punkten zurücklegen. Spar dir die Einleitung und die Zusammenfassung und mach Schluss, bevor du zu Punkt Zwei kommst. Nur eine kurze Predigt erreicht das Ohr des Sünders, und ein Geistlicher glaubt nicht, dass er selbst eine lange Predigt nötig hat. Lass den Narren das erste und den Frauen das letzte Wort. Die Wurst steckt immer in der Mitte des Sandwiches. Ein bisschen Butter auf beiden Seiten kann natürlich nicht schaden, wenn es für jemanden gedacht ist, der Butter mag.
Vergiss auch nicht, dass es leichter ist, klug auszusehen als klug zu reden. Sag weniger als dein Gegenüber und hör mehr zu als selbst zu sprechen: Wer zuhört, kann sich nicht verplappern und schmeichelt gleichzeitig dem, der es gerade tut. Gib den meisten Männern einen guten Zuhörer und den meisten Frauen genügend Briefpapier und sie erzählen alles, was sie wissen. Geld spricht eine klare Sprache - aber nur, wenn sein Besitzer eine lose Zunge hat, und dann sind seine Bemerkungen stets anstößig. Armut spricht ebenfalls eine klare Sprache, aber niemand will hören, was sie zu sagen hat.
