If you notice my bracketed comments, Noe, I voiced a question. It's up to the individual to decide what the answer is for them. I don't think anyone's judging you.
Anyway, would it not be better to say turn the screw anti-clockwise? Or if you're in American English "counter-clockwise"

Hello Alex,
yes and we mostly don't translate novels and poems. I was dreaming about a Google branch for translators, that looks only through all the known bilingual websites.

What good would it do you if you find an existing translation? You can't use someone else's translation except for terminological purposes. Copyright of exiting translations belong to their respective translators, even if the client owns copyright or has a licence to use the source text.

It's all about threshold of originality and how much you break down the text.

If you break down a text on sentence level, who can actually claim that he has copyright on translating "turn the screw clockwise" in a particular manner?!
So let's assume that we do like Farkas, align the bitext and create a TM. Unless it's litterary translation, I wouldn't have any qualms using that TM.
And in certain fields, especially legal, some clients actually prefer using a translation that has already been established.
I remember a job we got from a law firm. They wanted the Italian constitution translated into English. We googled it, found an official English translation on some Italian government site, and submitted our job together with an invoice.
Was the client upset? Not at all!
If we had reinvented the wheel and came up with creative, unique translations of these terms, they would have complained. Now, being reassured that all terminology was established, they gladly paid us the full price.

That's a borderline case even for my taste and I'm towards the liberal (immoral?) end of the scale... but then dumb clients who don't check the internet first don't really deserve any better, do they? I mean, the Constitution...??? They should have known it must have been translated already.

Hello again,
so I think the winner is the plagiarism detector. It seems to be quite helpful. It gives you a full report on the used "sources" and "references" of a given texte. Also the text ist colour marked so you can see which parts have been found on the internet and also where and how often. In less than one minute, it gives you an overview which parts of your text are on the net.
The budget version seems to be sufficient for translation purposes.
