A source of power in an airplane is the power plant. The power plant consists of an engine or engines and different systems.
There are two main types of aviation engines: piston or internal combustion engine and jet engine. Jet engines are divided into three main groups, gas turbines, ram jets and rocket engines.
The first to be considered is a piston or reciprocating engine. The piston engines are also called internal combustion engine as combustion takes place inside the cylinder. Gas turbine engines are widely used nowadays. They are subdivided into turbojet, turboprop, turbofan or by-pass and turboshaft engines.
Turbojet engines operate on the jet thrust. If a gas turbine engine has a propeller on the same shaft as the compressor,it is called a turboprop.

Джерелом потужності в літаках є силова установка, яка складається з двигуна або двигунів та різних систем.
Існує два основних типи авіаційних двигунів: поршневий двигун або двигун внутрішнього згорання та турбодвигун. Турбодвигуни поділяються на три основні групи:газотурбінні, прямоточні реактивні та ракетні(рідинно-реактивні) двигуни.
Спочатку розглянемо поршневий двигун, його також називають двигуном внутрішнього згорання, так як саме згорання відбувається всередині циліндра. На сьогоднішній день широко використовуються газотурбінні двигуни. Вони поділяються на турбореактивні, турбогвинтові, двукхконтурні газотурбінні та турбовентиляційні двигуни.
Турбореактивні двигуни призводяться в дію за допомогою турбореактивної тяги. Якщо газотурбінний двигун має силову установку на тому ж самому валі, що й компресор, то він називається турбогвинтовим двигуном.
