English to French: A few examples of evolution./ Quelques exemples d'évolution General field: Science
Source text - English Today is the day we celebrate the birth and life work of the famous biologist Charles Darwin, born 207 years ago. Darwin is most famous for his theory of evolution through natural selection, which revolutionised the field of biology by providing a viable mechanism to account for the evolution of biodiversity on Earth.
When Darwin first published "On the Origin of the species" in 1859, he lamented on the poor quality of the fossil record, which he felt should contain more evidence of evolutionary transitions through time.
Little did Darwin know that continued probing of the fossil record would eventually yield such examples in plenitude. Let's take a look at some of those examples here, one of the best transitional series in the fossil record is that of whales. These animals began as superficially dog-like creatures that walk on land some 49 million years ago. Over time, these animals grew larger, their nostrils migrated backwards onto the forehead, their forelimbs turned to flippers and their hind limbs virtually disappeared as they adapted to life in the water. This fantastic succession is well documented in the fossil gallery of the museum.
A second well documented transition is the evolution of the tetrapods (four-legged animals) from fishes. As best as we can determine, this process took place between 390 and 360 million years ago. It is during this time interval that we see the evolution of fish-like forms with tetrapod-like limb bones, weight-bearing joints, necks, pelvic-girdles fused to the back bone and loss of gills.
One such transitional form is Tiktaalik from Nunavut. Among the dinosaurs fossil collection, the Ceratopsia or horned dinosaur belongs to a lineage that began as hornless bipeds some 160 million years ago and evolved to include massive, horn-faced quadrupeds by the time of triceratops some 66 million years ago. If Darwin were alive today, would he not feel vindicated ?

L'oeuvre du célèbre biologiste est surtout connue pour sa théorie concernant l'évolution par la sélection naturelle, celle-ci ayant révolutionné le domaine de la biologie en révélant un processus réaliste, justifiant l'évolution de la biodiversité sur terre. A l'époque où Darwin publia "L'origine des espèces" en 1859, il déplorait la quantité insuffisante de fossiles disponibles. Il pensait que ceux-ci permettraient de fournir plus d'informations concernant les phases de l'évolution. Darwin ne soupçonnait pas que la recherche continue de fossiles deviendrait extrêmement fructueuse. Examinons quelques uns d'entre eux. Parmi les meilleures collections dans les annales des fossiles, il y a les baleines. Celles-ci sont apparues comme des créatures ressemblant vaguement à des chiens, marchant sur terre il y a approximativement 49 millions d'années. Au fil du temps elles se développèrent , leurs narines se déplacèrent vers l'arrière, leurs membres avant se transformèrent en nageoires, leurs membres arrières disparurent presque complètement pour s'adapter à la vie aquatique. Cette transformation étonnante est bien documentée dans la galerie des fossiles du musée.
Une seconde métamorphose bien documentée est celle des tétrapodes (animaux à quatre pattes), ils étaient initialement des poissons. On a pu déterminer que cette transformation s'est produite il y a entre 360 et 390 millions d'années. C'est pendant cet intervalle que l'on a observé la modification d'une espèce ressemblant à un poisson ayant une ossature correspondant à des articulations portantes, une nuque, une ceinture pelvienne fusionnant avec la colonne vertébrale ainsi que la disparition des branchies. "Tiktaalit" trouvé a Nunavut (Canada) représente cette espèce en mutation.
Parmi la collection de fossiles se trouve le le ceratopsia (dinosaure avec des cornes) . Il appartenait originairement à une lignée de petits bipèdes sans corne, apparue il y a 160 millions d'années pour se transformer en tricératops , animal massif à quatre pattes avec des cornes, vivant il y a 66 millions d'années.
Si Darwin était en vie, peut-être ressentirait-il ses recherches validées.

There is a scene in Spike Lee's film "Do the right thing" of a white cyclist steaming along a Brooklun street on a hot, hot summer day. He bumps into Buggin' Out, one of the black kids hanging out on the street.
Buggin' Out is outraged "Not only did you knock me down, you stepped on my brand new Air Jordans..... and that's all you can say 'Excuse me', he shrieks and lunges towards the cyclist.
For a Brooklyn boy like Buggin' Out, his Nike Air Jordan are not just a pair of sports shoes but a badge of pride. The real Buggin' Out will own as many as a hundred pairs of sports shoes costing anything from $50 to $150 each. All in all more than 44m pairs of sports shoes will be sold in the US this year.
For a handfull of multinational manufacturers that dominate the $20 billion world-wide market, it all adds up to to an extraordinary buoyant business. But the market is changing, the axis of power is shifting away from the manufacturers towards the consumer.
It is not the technicians in Nike's research department or Reebok's marketing managers that dictate which styles will sell, but Brooklyn boys like Buggin' Out. The sport shoe market is turning into a multinational's nightmare.
The sports shoe of today is the creation of three US companies : Nike, Reebok and Converse, which emerged in the 1980s. They use a combination of technical innovations and low cost manufacturing to steal market share away from Adidas and Puma, the German manufacturers that had dominated the market for decades. These companies identified a need for smarter, more stylist shoes to suit the emerging sports of the 1980s. Nike went for running, Reebok for aerobics.

Au total, plus de 44 millions de paires seront vendues aux Etats-Unis cette année. Pour un petit nombre de fabricants multinationaux dominant un marché mondial de 17 milliards d'euros, cela constitue un marché extraordinairement dynamique. Cependant ce marché est en train de changer, l'axe du pouvoir s'éloigne des fabricants pour se diriger vers les consommateurs.
Ce ne sont pas les spécialistes du secteur de recherche chez Nike ou les directeurs du marketing chez Reebok qui décident quel style de chaussures sera vendu mais des garçons de Brooklyn comme Buggin' Out. Le marché de la chaussure de sport se transforme en cauchemar pour les multinationales.
La chaussure de sport d'aujourd'hui est apparue pendant les années 80, elle est la création de trois entreprises américaines : Nike, Reebok et Converse. Ses fabricants ont pour cela associé l'innovation technique et la confection à bas prix afin de s'emparer des parts d'Adidas et Puma, les fabricants allemands ayant dominé le marché pendant des décennies.

Source text - English The early years of any business or organisation are often difficult, fraught with financial heartache and administrative difficulties. In retrospect, the initial years for the EFLA, though not easy, were less problematic than might have been expected. Much of this was due to the careful guidance of our first President and Secretary and now to the continued firm hand of Jef de Gryse and the hard work of Jeanine Colin.
But we are far from sailing in clear water yet, and financially there are still a number of matters to be resolved.
We must all agree that a specific aim of the Foundation is to achieve stability and long term sustainability in association with continuing development. The main purpose being to bring together all members on a regular basis for the advancement of the Foundation's specific objectives and Professional Practice. It has been then necessary for the last two years to reduce financial expenditure in order to keep the Foundation solvent. Certain matters remain to be resolved and I would like to put these to the forefront for discussion and to pull and to put before you a few thoughts and ideas for review.
With the balance of current income and expenditure, it is impossible to finance a second General Assembly meeting each year (Approx. 10500 ecus). Most members of the Foundation would feel it essential to meet twice a year or perhaps would prefer to meet or working in groups to maintain a continuity and working progress. This matter must be addressed quickly before momentum is lost.

Translation - French Les premières années d'existence d'une entreprise ou d'une association sont souvent difficiles, chargées de problèmes financiers et de désagréments administratifs. Malgré les difficultés, rétrospectivement, les premières annees de la EFLA (fondation européenne pour l'architecture du paysage), n'ont pas été réellement problématiques. Ceci étant dû en grande partie à la gestion prudente et à la fermeté de notre premier président - secrétaire et maintenant à la détermination sans relâche de Jef de Gryse, ainsi qu'au travail acharné de Jeanine Colin.
Cependant, nous ne sommes pas encore tirés d'affaires et certaines questions d'ordre financier doivent être résolues.
Nous devons tous admettre que l'objectif précis de la fondation est de parvenir à la stabilité, à la pérennité à long terme ainsi qu'à l'expansion de manière continue. L'intention principale étant de rassembler tous les membres régulièrement pour l'avancement de l'objectif précis de la fondation : la formation et l'exercice de la profession.

En l'état actuel des finances (revenus et dépenses), il est impossible de financer une seconde Assemblée Générale. Celle-ci revient approximativement à 105 00 écus*. La plupart des membres penseront qu'il est nécessaire de se rencontrer deux fois par an ou peut-être préféreraient- t' ils se retrouver pour travailler en groupes, ceci afin de maintenir une continuité et surveiller l'évolution de notre travail. Cette question doit être adressée rapidement de manière à garder notre dynamisme.
