A Billion People suffer from depression…One third of the world’s population are at risk of developing it
Depression is considered – without exaggeration – the disease of our era. It is one of the most significant and serious problems suffered by humans in all societies around the world. It is one of the most common mental disorders, as the figures and statistics issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicate that a high proportion of people are suffering from depression. Depression ranks fourth amongst diseases that in our recent time led to disabilities and huge burdens. Additionally, it is expected to rank as the second in terms of financial human suffering by 2020.
New editions of the book titled ‘Depression: The disease and the treatment’ have been published simultaneously in three Arab cities, which are Alexandria, Beirut and Riyadh. It illustrates a realistic picture of the causes, features and symptoms of this disease as well as preventative ways and modern methods of treatment. This article will present some information about depression, which is the disease of our contemporary era.
Depression…The nature and size of the problem:
Observers have described depression as the ‘Disease of the Era’ due to the unprecedented and growing spread of this disease in all contemporary societies. This has been confirmed by the figures shown in the WHO reports, which indicate that 7% of the world’s populations suffers from depression, which is considered one of the most widespread mental illnesses. Recent statistics indicate that between 18 – 30 % of humans suffer from depression at some point of their life. This means that one in three may develop depression, and over a billion people around the world suffer from it.
One of the indicators of the nature and size of the problem of depression, that studies have confirmed, is that a large portion of the patients suffering from depression (around 80%) do not have their depression detected nor treated and remain in the state of suffering for many years.
Furthermore, in 15% of the cases, patients sought treatment without being aware that depression is the cause of their suffering, so they sought treatment from general practitioners, while not being treated psychologically. In only 3% of the cases, patients with depression sought treatment from psychiatrists. The remaining patients with depression (around 2%) committed suicide. This is another indicator towards the seriousness and importance of depression, which is considered the leading cause of suicide. Also, the World Health Organisation estimated that 800.000 people from around the world commit suicide each year.
Causes..Genetics, Chemistry and Stress:
Many patients and their relatives are wondering about the causes of depression, and if there are people who are more likely to develop depression more than others?
The answers to these questions have piqued the interest of psychologists and research has been conducted to discover the causes of depression. It was shown that depression can be genetically transmitted, for it passes down through the ‘genes’; this means that some people are more likely to develop depression, with their psychological composition tending to be sad, isolated and depressed, even before they show any symptoms of the disease. Also, it was shown through observations that the short and fat body type is associated with higher risks of developing depression. However, this does not mean that any short, overweight person will inevitably develop depression!
Research has revealed that there are chemical changes in the nervous system associated with depression, including a lack of some substances such as ‘serotonin’. It is not known specifically whether the chemical changes are the cause or the result of depression, but it is certain that agitation affects the brain chemicals and the psychological balance.
What psychiatry has reached so far is that the person’s mood and behaviour are linked to the chemistry in the nervous system. From what we can observe, development of depression after being exposed to life stress, financial loss, or the loss of loved ones confirms that these events negatively affect the psychological state in general. However, those who are prone to developing depression are overly affected, and their suffering with depression lasts a long time.
Developing depression is not associated with age, as children, youth, and elderly people are all at risk, but the rate is higher amongst women as opposed to men, as it is two or three cases amongst women while it is one case amongst men.

مليار إنسان يعانون من الاكتئاب .. وثلث سكان العالم معرضون للإصابة به
يعتبر الاكتئاب النفسي - دون مبالغة - مرض العصر الحالي وهو أحد أهم وأخطر المشكلات والظواهر التي يعاني منها الإنسان في كل مجتمعات العالم .. وهو من أكثر الاضطرابات النفسية انتشاراً حيث تشير الأرقام والإحصائيات الصادرة عن منظمة الصحة العالمية إلي إصابة نسبة عالية من الناس بالاكتئاب، ويحتل الاكتئاب المرتبة الرابعة بين الأمراض التي تسبب العجز والإعاقة والأعباء الهائلة في الوقت الحالي، كما يتوقع أن يصبح في المرتبة الثانية بالنسبة للأمراض من حيث التكلفة المادية والمعاناة الإنسانية بحلول عام 2020. وتحت عنوان "الاكتئاب: المرض والعلاج" صدرت طبعات كتاب جديد في ثلاث مدن عربية في نفس الوقت هي الإسكندرية وبيروت والرياض حيث يتضمن عرض صورة واقعية لأسباب ومظاهر وأعراض هذا المرض .. وطرق والوقاية والأساليب الحديثة للعلاج. وهنا في هذا الموضوع نقدّم بعض المعلومات عن الاكتئاب النفسي مرض العصر.
الاكتئاب .. طبيعة المشكلة وحجمها:
لقد اطلق المراقبون وصف " مرض العصر " على الاكتئاب النفسي بسبب الانتشار المتزايد لهذا المرض في كل مجتمعات عصرنا الحالي بصورة غير مسبوقة ، وتؤكد ذلك الأرقام التي وردت في تقارير منظمة الصحة العالمية والتي تشير إلي أن 7% من سكان العالم يعانون من الاكتئاب الذى يعتبر احد اكثر الأمراض النفسية انتشاراً ، وتشير إحصائيات حديثة إلى أن 18-30% من البشر يصيبهم الاكتئاب في فترة من فترات حياتهم ، وهذا يعني أن واحداً من كل ثلاثة قد يصاب بالاكتئاب، ويعني أيضاً أن أكثر من مليار إنسان في العالم يعاني من الاكتئاب.
ومن المؤشرات التي تدل علي طبيعة مشكلة الاكتئاب وحجمها ما تؤكده الدراسات من أن نسبة كبيرة من مرضى الاكتئاب (نحو 80%) لا يتم اكتشاف معاناتهم من المرض او علاجهم ويظلون في حالة معاناة لسنوات طويلة، وفي 15% من الحالات يذهب المرضى للعلاج دون علم بأن الاكتئاب هو سبب معاناتهم فيتجهون إلي الأطباء العموميين ولا يتم علاجهم نفسياً، وفي 3% من الحالات فقط يسعى مرضى الاكتئاب لطلب العلاج لدى الأطباء النفسيين. أما بقية مرضى الاكتئاب (نحو 2%) فإنهم يقدمون علي الانتحار، وهذا مؤشر آخر علي خطورة وأهمية الاكتئاب الذى يعتبر السبب الأول للانتحار حيث قدّرت منظمة الصحة العالمية ان 800 ألف يقدمون على الانتحار كل عام في أنحاء العالم.
الأسباب .. الوراثة والكيمياء والضغوط:
يتساءل الكثير من المرضى وأقاربهم عن أسباب مرض الاكتئاب..وهل هناك أشخاص لديهم استعداد للإصابة بالاكتئاب أكثر من غيرهم؟..وقد شغلت الإجابة على هذه التساؤلات علماء النفس ونشطت البحوث لمحاولة الكشف عن أسباب الاكتئاب، وقد تبين أن الاكتئاب ينتقل بالوراثة عبر الأجيال عن طريق "الجينات"، وبعض الناس لديهم استعداد للإصابة بالاكتئاب ويميل تكوينهم النفسي إلى الحزن والعزلة والكآبة حتى قبل أن تظهر عليهم أعراض المرض. كما ثبت من خلال الملاحظة أن بناء الجسم المكتنز القصير يرتبط بمعدلات أعلى من الاستعداد للإصابة بالاكتئاب، لكن ذلك لا يعني أن كل شخص بدين أو قصير القامة سوف يصاب حتماً بالاكتئاب!
وقد كشفت الأبحاث عن وجود تغييرات كيميائية في الجهاز العصبي تصاحب حدوث الاكتئاب منها نقص بعض المواد مثل "السيروتونين"؛ ولا يعرف علي وجه التحديد اذا كانت هذه التغييرات هي سبب الاكتئاب أو نتيجة له، لكن الأمر المؤكد هو أن الانفعالات تؤثر على كيمياء المخ وعلى الاتزان النفسي. وما توصل إليه الطب النفسي حتى الآن هو أن مزاج الإنسان وسلوكه يرتبط بكيمياء الجهاز العصبي، وما نلاحظه من حدوث الاكتئاب عقب التعرض لضغوط الحياة والخسائر المالية، أو عند فقد شخص عزيز لدينا يؤكد أن هذه الأحداث تؤثر سلبياً على الحالة النفسية للإنسان بصفة عامة، أما الأشخاص الذين لديهم استعداد مسبق للإصابة بالاكتئاب فإنهم يتأثرون بصورة مبالغ فيها وتستمر معاناتهم من حالة الاكتئاب لفترات طويلة. ولا ترتبط الإصابة بالاكتئاب بمرحلة من العمر فالصغار والشباب وكبار السن معرضون للاصابة، لكن النسبة تزيد عند النساء مقارنة بالرجال لتصل إلى حالتين أو ثلاث حالات لدى النساء مقابل كل حالة واحدة لدى الرجال .
