French term

prégnance

French to English Art/Literary History
Hello everyone,

I am translating a text about the attitude of French diplomats in the Philippines. One paragraph title reads :

"Comparer ou la prégnance des représentations françaises ."

I need some suggestions as to the translation of the word "prégnance" into English since I am hesitating to translate it with "pregnancy" (despite it having another meaning than the obvious one). Your help would be much appreciated!

resonance.

RC. "Impact", for me, lacks the suggestion of an effect that persists over time.

Related possibilities (less satisfying, I think): repercussions, reverberation.

disagree Michaël Zamo (X) : salience is related to pregnance but is not a bit the same idea : it lacks the notion of "strength"

maybe "importance" seems a cop-out but it is much more the sort of term an English writer would use in such a context

RC. "Impact" has a similar idea, but lacks the suggestion of something that persists over time.

Along the same lines: "Reverberations" "Repercussions" (but not as good, I think).

Comparing, or prolepsis of French representations??? Would need to have more context to determine if it's appropriate.

Prolepsis. Not to be confused with prolapsus, even as a slip of the tongue.
Peer comment(s):

agree Carol Gullidge : re yr previous discussion: perhaps pregnance rather than prolepsis, in this case?

profound effect, impact

this word has no meaning of *pregnancy* in general. Here I would use its 2-nd meaning in the sphere of psychology, which is **profound effect, impact**

Thank you Nang. The main thing is you select the most convenient by context meaning. In my opinion they used *pregnance* in the text in order to show really long time effect of some actions. Tandis que *resonance* a le sens de l'action assez courte, comme *echo, response*
Note from asker:
Thank you for your input, it is indeed the general meaning!
Peer comment(s):

agree Michaël Zamo (X) : yes, I think this is the meaning that has to be kept.
