MatthewLaSon Nov 19, 2007:
You may not see my other suggestion in my answer which is: Multimedia is also a pedagogical tool.
siragui Nov 19, 2007:
I suggest reformulating the term question to read "être au service de".

Multimedia can also assist in the teaching process/is available to assist in the teaching process

Hello,

It doesn't technically mean "multimedia IS used for teaching", but rather "multimedia CAN be used for teaching" since it is readily available to assist teachers.

au service de = is at the disposal in order to help or give service to (est disponsible, est là pour que les enseignants en profitent)

au service de = there to assist/help (can be used by)

You could also say "multimedia can be used in the teaching process" as it clearly means that multimedia is available to assist in the teaching process.

If something is "at the service of", it means it's there for the taking or to be used to one's advantage in some way or other. But, it doesn't technically mean the teachers are indeed using it (but they most likely are).

I hope this helps.

agree katsy : agree totally with your interpretation - a little hesitant about wording - but for the moment, find nothing better! Still, your interpretation is spot on!

Yes, I used this "IN teaching" in the Explanation but instead used "BY" in the main target term ("est au service de" = "is used by"). In the context of the given source phrase, we do need to change "by" to "in" (or "for" as Melissa also suggested.)
agree Melissa McMahon : or "multimedia is also used for teaching"

Yes this is also an option.
neutral MatthewLaSon : The French isn't saying that teachers use multimedia (even though we know they do). "Au service de" technically means "readily available to help." Put a "can" in there somewhere. "Multimedia can be used by ..."

multimedia (resources) can also be employed / deployed for pedagogical ends/ to aid in teaching

I prefer translating "le multimédia" as "multimedia resources" in this case

suggestions (or other variation of the terms below):

multimedia (resources) can also be employed for pedagogical ends

multimedia (resources) can also be deployed to aid in teaching

(I got the impression this text is marketing the uses of multimedia, and this is what guided my translation choices)
Peer comment(s):

agree katsy : agree with this too. Yes, multimedia as a teaching tool in itself...

is valuable/useful in the field of

"être au service de" implies a willingness to serve when it involves a person. In the case of "multimedia", this is merely a decorative expression -- unless it actually refers to "multimedia producers" being adaptable and responding to the demands of teachers.
