Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) respiratory cycle

The article is describing capnography, and first gives an overview of the resp. cycle. At first thought, "ventilación" would naturally be "ventilation". As far as I am aware, ventilation is the movement of gases both in and out of the lungs. However, the description that the document gives is:

El ciclo respiratorio comienza con la entrada de oxígeno en los pulmones, éste llega a los alvéolos y pasa a la sangre. Desde allí es transportado, unido a la hemoglobina, a los diferentes órganos. Esta primera fase se conoce como oxigenación. A nivel celular, el oxígeno y la glucosa se convierten en energía (ATP) y CO2 mediante el ciclo de Krebs. El CO2 difunde a la sangre, donde circula en equilibrio con bicarbonato, sin necesidad de transportador, y es eliminado por el pulmón mediante el proceso denominado ventilación.

Is their description of ventilation a valid one, or is there another term for solely the 2nd stage of the process (removal of co2 from cells>lungs>out)
