Spanish term

compra de barricas en primicia

Spanish to English Science Wine / Oenology / Viticulture Special offer to members of wine club
I wanted to check that "en primicia" doesn't have any special meaning in the context of wine.

This is one of the membership deals offered by a wine company to those joining its club.

One of the reasons for wondering if it has a different meaning in this context is that this is already termed "acceso exclusiva", so it seems slightly repetitive ...

So, either reassurance or information will be very gratefully received!

Hola Noni, mi amiga me acaba de escribir y básicamente dijo lo mismo que Charles. Hasta me dio el mismo enlace como referencia, que casualidad. Espero ya tengas suficiente información.
Noni Gilbert Riley (asker) Dec 22, 2010:
Glad I asked! Very interesting replies coming in. Thanks to everyone so far!
erowe Dec 22, 2010:
The bad egg smell probably come from the sulphites they used to clean the barrel. Also be careful - there is "vino primicia", which is new wine /wine of the year, and "en primicia", which is wine that should keep.

en primeur erowe has got it:
"La compra 'en primeur' (en primicia) consiste en la venta por el productor del vino que todavía está en barrica. Se realiza a unos escasos seis meses de su elaboración y generalmente los precios se dan a conocer entre principios de abril y principios de junio del año siguiente a la cosecha."

Deborah You may be right; I don't know. It comes in a discussion of wine that smells of bad eggs when first exposed to the air and the smell disappearing after a short while. That's why I thought the point might be that the barrel had just been opened for the first time. But that doesn't necessarily mean that that's the meaning of "en primicia". We need an expert here.

Hola Noni, tengo una amiga española que hace poco tomó un curso intensivo sobre vinos. Le he mandado un email con tu pregunta, te aviso en cuanto responda. Saludos :)
Bubo Coroman (X) Dec 22, 2010:
Charles what I understand from your first comment is that "catando... en primicia" means that the tasting took place at the "pre-release" stage of the tinto, in other words, these were the first people to taste it. I understand primicia to mean the first part of a batch of wine or the first casks in a particular vintage.
Charles Davis Dec 22, 2010:
Maybe it just means barrels that have not been opened since fermentation. I know a Spanish oenologist but I won't be able to get hold of him till this evening. If you haven't solved it by then I'll give him a call.
Could it be first pressing?
Evans (X) Dec 22, 2010:
Noni Not sure of the English here without checking, but the following site seems to refer to something similar to your translation and could be useful:

Charles Davis Dec 22, 2010:
Noni I would tread carefully here. I think it may have an oenological meaning (is that the word?). Look at this:
"El otro día estuvimos catando en una bodega un tinto fermentado en barrica en primicia (aún sin embotellar, directamente del depósito)."

I'll see if I can find out more.

purchase of barrels en primeur ( or Wine futures")

En primeur is commonly used and means that you have bought a new wine that should be good to keep. Usually payment is in stages and you hope that your investment is rewarded.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Great, thank you so much. I received a further doc this morning from the same client and they actually use "en primeur" (well, they misspell it, but there you go!). Confirmadísimo. Felices fiestas and many thanks to all."

purchase of casks on a first refusal basis / with the right of first refusal

from my research looks like the club members have first refusal of a particular vintage upon release, and whatever they do not take up of that vintage, whether casks or bottles, is sold through normal wine distribution channels. There is a difference between this and exclusive access.

Acceso exclusivo a la reserva o compra de barricas en primicia.Podrá reservar o adquirir una barrica que ha estado bajo el atento cuidado y supervisión de nuestro equipo de enólogos. A través de nuestro sistema primeur podrá adquirirla con unas condiciones inigualables, además tendrá la opción de personalizar a través de su firma y número de socio la barrica.

Únicamente se elaborarán 16.000 botellas, de las que el 25% se han vendido ya por barricas en primicia.

further to my comment just posted, an alternative translation could be:

"purchase of pre-release casks" (meaning the first casks before the ones not desired by the club members are released onto the market)
