Mit einem Anruf beim Endkunden habe ich schließlich herausbekommen: Es sind tatsächlich "verfügbare" bzw. "frei verfügbare" Übernachtungen, und zwar in Abgrenzung zu speziellen "Corporate"-Kontingenten für Unternehmenskunden.

Re-thinking that one ... ... and looking at references to "discretionary bookings" and the like on the internet, I am wondering if it simply refers to situations where the travel agent has discretion as to where he advises people to go (they might know they want to go to resort X, but they can still choose whether to stay at hotel A, B or C - the travel agent steers them towards hotel A and gets a bonus). Maybe.

Because the holidaymaker books the extra nights through the travel agent - they simply choose where to spend them since they are not included in the basic package they are booking.

@ Armorel Das ist die übliche Bedeutung des Wortes (etwa: nach Ermessen), aber ich glaube nicht, dass das hier passt... wie sollte das Reisebüro beweisen, dass ein Urlauber noch zusätzlich 3 Übernachtungen in dem Hotel angehängt hat?

The word "discretionary" ... ... implies an element of choice. In the context of a holiday, "discretionary nights" are nights for which the holidaymaker chooses where they are to be spent. For example, you might book a week's tour to a series of hotels (or a week at a fixed place) and decide to stay on for a couple of extra nights before you go home - they are discretionary nights in the sense that you can choose where to spend them. From the point of view of the travel agent, I would see discretionary nights as optional extra nights that a customer chooses to add on to a package.

Da die Zimmer ja lange vorher gebucht werden, weiß man ungefähr, welche voraussichtlich leer bleiben. Wenn diese von dem Reisebüro dann doch noch vermittelt werden - ich stelle mir eine Art Last-Minute-Buchung vor - kann dieses sich eine Prämie verdienen...

@ Regina: Wie hätte ich denn das zu verstehen? Was nicht verfügbar ist, kann ja ohnehin nicht gebucht werden. Warum wird denn dann das "verfügbar" hier so betont (durch das "focus on")?

Vielleicht sollte ich noch hinzufügen, ... ... dass hier keine Privatkunden über die Reisebüros buchen, sondern Unternehmenskunden.
