الرئيس المنتهية ولايته

We are talking about Hamid Karzai during the period of Afghani elections. He is no longer in office, and he has not yet been elected. I looked at such terms as "interim" but that means إنتقالي. The term "incumbent" doesn't fit either, because it implies "being in office currently". Help!

Actually, the Arabic press is split between and without a . You will find that Al-Jazeera, and the Arabic versions of BBC and CNN use

How about the acting president. Thay works in all situations. You could also substitute an emblishment instead such as "who is hoping to be reelected", "who is awaiting his second term",

Don't feel bad. Not to be outdone, I had no idea his name in Arabic was and always thought it was . I should avoid trying to read Pushtu in German, shouldn't I? :-))
Nesrin Dec 8, 2004:
Yeah! It should be fine to say that an outgoing president has been re-elected, since at the time of the elections, his term had already come to an end.
He was actually sworn in yesterday, as I just realised, and, no, I HAD NO IDEA!! :-((
Non-ProZ.com Dec 8, 2004:
Hmmm.. you mean in the context of the article, right? Because he has just been sworn in as the new president of Afghanistan a few days ago. I used htms'
phrase in one place, and then came across this
" ." which looks ungainly if you say "Despite this, the president whose term in office has ended occupies the second place behind Abdul Rashid Dustum in the northern Takhar." What do you two think?

outgoing president

The outgoing president.

Literally, the president whose term has come to an end.

On second thought, in the case of Karzai, since we\'re not sure he IS actually outgoing (he may be re-elected), it\'s better to go with the literal version provided by me or htms.

Ok, another addendum just for the record - please ignore my previous note. Outgoing should be fine in any case!

I think \"outgoing\" goes well here.
or..I would say: \"Despite this, the former/previous president...\"
