What is a tell? Settlement in fifth millennium Bulgaria

Introduction
Prehistoric tells dominate the archaeology of Neolithic, Eneolithic and Early bronze age southeastern Europe. They are the centres of major fieldwork projects (e.g. Yunatsite), they provide the chronological yardsticks of Balkan prehistory (e.g. Karanovo, Ezero), and they serve, almost exclusively, as the material for reconstructing contemporary community activity and behaviour (e.g. Ovcharovo, Golyamo Delchevo).

The Turkish word for tell is höyük, as in Çatalhöyük, or tepe.[1][2] Toponyms indicating settlement mounds in the Balkans are often translated as "grave": magoula or toumba (because small tells can be confused with burial mounds) in Thessaly and Macedonia. **The word mogila is used in Bulgaria**, gomila in Slovenia, and magura in Romania.

Podgoritsa Tell near Turgovishte, in NE Bulgaria.
The second ten days were spent in a very different milieu and a different enterprise. This was a mapping and surface reconnaissance project of the Eneolithic tell of Podgoritsa, near Turgovishte, in the agricultural north-east Bulgaria. The **tell settlement** of Podgoritsa is the focus of what we hope will be a longer term joint US-Bulgarian research project.
