因为此说法仅是个人观点，未得到学术界公认。梅先生明确指出后书法以1977年为始点，1985年趋于完备，直至我们无法估量的未来。
梅墨生先生“当代中国书法的表现思潮”
本文取义的当代中国书法，以1977年为始点。从这时开始，中国书法的出版、大展、大赛、教育、机构等已相继出现并趋于完备。我将书法的当下状态概括为"后书法时期"。
因此我曾在《书法图式研究》（江苏教育出版社1997年版）一著和《线条的图像史》（1995年写定）一文中分别尝试过提出这一思考。大体上我将书法史分为三部分：前书法时期（秦汉以前的无限远古--这有待考古学的不断确认）--书法时期（汉晋以降至二十世纪八十年代中期）--后书法时期（自1985年始至于我们无法估量的未来）。
