lock was not acquired (on object A) / lock could not be acquired
This seems to be the mainstream phrasing in English. For an error message style, you could use "Failure to acquire lock on object A" or "failed to acquire lock on object A".

There are references -- but far fewer in number -- to \"failed to lock\" as well, but many come from sites in non-native-English-speaking countries.

: I agree with your explanation per se. However, it is a software manual. The trend for terminology in software manuals is to non-technical English and the simplest explanation.

"Acquire" is correct technical English. Correct grammar and usage are still in style. A user manual for a non-computer literate person would not contain this sort of warning -- it is for programmers and the like. A "quick start" should be simple; not this

FYI
