Chinese term

原料药

Chinese to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals drug
It is commonly translated as "Raw Material Drug". I don't think it is right. It is not raw materials but drug product at its initial stage, to be processed or prepared into finihsed drugs.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jan 30, 2004:
CODINGGB2312 Hi ʦ
Your "Intermediate Pharmaceutical Materials" may be more suitable for another commonly used word for raw drugs that is ҽҩм, which is commonly translated as pharmaceutical intermediate. As a chemical professor from Zhejiang University explained that there is no distinct distinction betweenҽҩм and ԭҩ Some people even call all medical products from which finished drugs are prepared ҽҩм. This question of mine is not for some particular project and has been long embedded in my mind for a long time. So it is just open for discussion.
Non-ProZ.com Jan 30, 2004:
ԭҩ Hi, everybody, as the result of my discussion with a chemical professor, we tend to agree with Denyces opinion, which is more professional, but perhaps the active sometimes can be omitted. However, I have just found somebody translated it as Bulk pharmaceutical chemicals. See the link http://www.google.com/search?q=BULK PHARMACEUTICAL &hl=zh-...|lang_zh-TW&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N, I am a little confused. There may not be a fixed English term for this word. And (active) pharmaceutical ingredient may not be strictly distinguished from pharmaceutical intermediate. Does anybody have further opinions?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Hi Denyce, Finally I surrendered to your side, because perhaps there are more people using API than ones using other expressions in translation in China. I.e., it is more commonly acknowledged. Actually as Yueyin said there may be no exclusive answer to this question. I have not finished this project yet, because I have my own routine work. Do you have much spare times? Have a nice Sunday! Thank you for you kindness! Jianming "

Intermediate Pharmaceutical Materials

I prefer Intermediate Pharmaceutical Materials although some companies use crude drugs or raw drugs.

I don\'t think \"Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients\" is very precise for \"原料药\". It refers to its function in the finished drug products. \"Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients\" is versus \"Inactive (Inert) Ingredients\", such as Excipient (赋形剂), colorant (着色剂), and etc. contained in the final dosage.

原料药 is used for making Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, but 两者之间不宜划等号.

See definition of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) at this site:
http://www.gempex.com/wegweiser/glossar_englisch.htm#Adulter...

Any substance that is represented for use in a drug and that, when used in the manufacturing, processing, or packaging of a drug, becomes an active ingredient or a finished dosage form of the drug. Such substances are intended to furnish pharmacological activity or other direct effect in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, or to affect the structure and function of the body of humans or other animals. APIs include substances manufactured by processes such as (1) chemical synthesis; (2) fermentation; (3) recombinant DNA or other biotechnology methods; (4) isolation/recovery from natural sources; or (5) any combination of these processes.

Jianming,

I agree with the chemistry professor. As a matter of fact, there is no exclusive answer to this good question. It\'s a matter of preference. I think all the other pros provided very good ideas. API may be more scientific and raw drugs may be easier to understand. Please note that, as other pros, I am not Kudoz point motivated . I just want to be involved and be helpful. I also learned a lot from Kudoz discussions. Please feel free to award points to anybody else. Thank you!
