UTF-8 encoded

夏朗德 (Charentes) is a region located in the West of France.

We called melon from this region "Melon Charentais" (charentais melon in english). Charentais is the adjectival form of the geographic proper name Charentes (as in 夏朗德人). Usually very sweet.

Careful, it's not an "a" but "e" = CharEntais, not CharAntais.

It looks like this

In fact, the Cavaillon Melon and Charentais Melon are grown from the same variety. The difference is only made by the soil and the climate where they are growing.
This Melon is also called "cantaloupe" in english (french cantaloup).
The name Cantaloup came from the name of a town where Popes had established their summer residence during the Renaissance, called Cantalupi (Italia).

Be careful not to confuse with what some Americans people called cantaloupe. Those cantaloupes are in fact "muskmelons" (Cucumis melo var. reticulatus = 网纹甜瓜).

On this page, you can see the difference :

The frist image is a charentais melon (same as Cavaillon melon)
The second is muskmelon (or "melon charentais brodé" in french) 网纹甜瓜.

Charantais甜瓜

Charantais = of Charente

Charente 中文有很多写法,你自己选最合适的一个。
不过我发现说葡萄酒时法语名称不变, 可能这个甜瓜的名称也最好不变。

Peer comment(s):

agree Xiaren : That's the problem with proper names transcription... But, the most common usage for Charentes seems to be 夏朗德. (maybe better to put it between brackets for an approximate pronounciation) ).

thank you esp for the missing "s" in the end of Charentes
