I understand what this means, but cannot find an italian term for this specific branch of adult education, usually applied to training farmers in developing countries, which facilitates learning through sharing experience and local knowledge rather than "lessons".

Extension non è inteso in senso temporale ma nel senso di 'estendere le conoscenze a gruppi di una comunità' (fa pensare ai programmi di 'outreach').
Partendo da questa definizione di Agricultural Extension Education: "The term extension was first used in the United States of America in the first decade of this century to connote the *extension of knowledge from the Land Grant Colleges to the farmers through the process of informal education*. In India, the terms community development & extension education became more popular with the launching of Community Development Projects in 1952 & with the establishment of the *National Extension Service* in 1953."
In italiano trovi numerosi testi (v. link a ricerca google) in cui gli Extension services sono tradotti con servizi di divulgazione agricola.
