一般的には、聴衆、観衆、観客のことであるが、広告関係用語としては、新聞、雑誌を読む人、テレビを観る人、ラジオを聴く人など、各媒体の受け手を言う。ある広告が媒体併用や反復によって一定期間露出された場合、少なくとも1回以上その広告に接触した人数が累積オーディエンス（cumulative audience）または非重複オーディエンス（unduplicated audience）である。
