Hebrew term

מרכז משק

Hebrew to English Other Human Resources Kibbutz management title
(Merakez Meshek)
This is the person who manages a kibbutz.
I am not aware of an equivalent position anywhere else.
Any ideas regarding its English translation?

Thanks.

Kibbutz Financial Manager

Having lived on a kibbutz for quite a while, that is the way I understand the position. The מרכז משק deals with the financial issues of the kibbutz. That position is not that of a general manager or coordinater, because that is the position of the MAZKIR. Together these two positions manage the kibbutz, but the מרכז משק is concened with the financial aspects of managing the kibbutz, the operation of the branches the produce income, the budget, etc.

I agree with Vez that the real meaning is economic managers, as the word HAMESHEK in Hebrew, in addition to meaning THE FARM can also be translated as THE ECONOMY. However, in American English, Financial Manager is used more frequently than Economic Manager. We have CFOs as Chief Financial Officers, and I've never really seen the title Economic Manager used anywhere.

disagree Lingopro : This will be either the גזבר or מנהל כספים not the מרכז משק, who is the agricultural manager

economic manager

I`m living on a kibbutz ;), but besides -
the highest elected positions in the kibbutz are the mazkir (general secretary), merakez meshek (economic manager) and gizbar (director of finances).

it is not wrong to use coordinator or administrator, but it should be most definitely an "economic" one
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot, sounds right, but i'll use "financial manager", as it has twice as much google results as "economic manager".
Peer comment(s):

disagree Lingopro : מרכז משק is not an economic manager.

Farm Manager/General Manager

From the mouth of one who served in this position.
In fact this position is a managerial position and not "simply" a coordination position.

My suggestion is posted as an ex Kibbutznik with a father who was a מרכז משק and who has excellent command of the English language and has a resume to the fact. Choose what you will, but in my opinion coordinator really demeans the position which is quite "high-ranking" in responsibility in kibbutz terms.

Today Kibbutz is built mainly of the 4 general functions:
1. Chairman
2. Agricultural manager
3. Community manager
4. Treasurer/Financial manager
It is possible that 2 positions will be held by one person, but this is mostly the division.

Note from asker:
I agree, that was exactly my reason for posting this question - there is actually no English equivalent which really describes the full meaning and scope of the job. But still, I think that "coordinator" is more widely used in this case.

disagree Vere Barzilai : Farm Manager...??? Kibbutz is more than a farm, actually it is not a farm

Vez, I guess you forgot a Kibbutz used to be a farming/agriculture entity. I agree that today the correct use will be General Manager which I also suggested in my answer.

Thanks. Coordinator sounds right, even though it doesn't really describe the full meaning of the actual position.

not Manager - contradics Kibbutz egalitarian dogma

It is in fact a manager but the Kibbutz egalitarian ideology avoids the use of such a term (that implies authority over others), so a more "neutral" term, like caretaker should be used IMHO.
