Freelancer
Bio:I was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the US when I was five years old, but my grandparents wanted to share my upbringing (I guess), so every two or three years, I would visit them and stay for two or three years. Traveling back and forth and attending school in both c...ountries, gave me the opportunity two learn both English and Spanish as my native languages.
I became an English teacher in Puerto rico; I taught there for 15 years before moving to Los Angeles, California where I taught English as a second language, Spanish, and mainstream English in High School.
My experience as a translator began as a student in 9th grade. I had just arrived in Puerto Rico for 9th grade. The history class was using a textbook in English, and the teacher asked me if I could help translating some pages for him, and I did. I did this until almost midyear when the textbook in Spanish finally arrived. Of course, this was unofficially.
Later working, here in LA, I was asked to translate official letters, school rules, some school documents, interpret for parents, teachers and at school meetings. Neighbors asked me to translate some letters for them. After I retired, I felt I needed to do something to keep busy, so I decided to try translating and became a freelance translator. I have translated legal documents, brochures, a book, a website and letters. I don't bid often enough because I don't have translation memory software and it's expensive for a beginner.
I don't have a translation certificate yet, but I hope to do so, soon. In the meantime I'm attending courses offered by ProZ and learning as much as I can.
