This is a possibility. Though "dolor agudo" can mean a sharp or intense pain.

Punzante would be suitable if it refers to a sharp stabbing kind of pain.

As usual, M C Filgueira is right (and Mario made a similar point): "dolor punzante" is really a stabbing pain, and it specifically implies a pain that flares up intermittently:
"punzar
3. intr. Dicho de un dolor: Avivarse de cuando en cuando."

So it would be suitable if the pain you're describing is a sharp stabbing pain, but unless it has this specific sense, it would be better to use "agudo" or "intenso", or one of M C Filgueira's other suggestions, "vivo" or "lancinante" (which means "muy agudo"). But "dolor agudo" would be perfectly correct and is probably the best option.
