I began translating from Portuguese into Spanish before studing the language.
Before that, I used to send the PORT-SP jobs to a Brazilian colleague, who did not master Spanish, but tried to do his best. I spent to much time correcting his translations, and the workload was high, so I decided first to translate short tests myself, using dictionaries and other tools, and then to study Portuguese in order to leverage that opportunity. I do not regret I love Portuguese and I love translating from it today.
In another opportunity I was offered to subtitle a video (an interview) from Finnish into Spanish. The translation (script) was already done, I only have to put the subtitles into the video, using a software provided by the customer. It was not easy, but the pauses and questions/answers by the different parties helped me a lot. It was challenging ▲ Collapse

I do sometimes translate bits of leftover French or Dutch when the intermediate translation is incomplete, but I would never admit this in public.

Dutch to English

As a rule I don't do it but I once translated a few sentences from Dutch to French that appeared in a Dutch text because those sentences were crucial to understanding the argument. I know French, I can read and understand it, only my speaking is rusty. I told the client and he agreed with my translation and why I did it, so it worked out.

I mentioned in my CV intermediate levels in Spanish and French. So, many times, regular clients ask me if I can translate simple and small documents from these languages in Portuguese, as they don't have a regular translator for that purpose in these pairs, and it's not nice to hire someone for only a small job and forget about them.
And I have accepted many of these jobs after taking a good look at the document and realizing it's no big deal. I don't see anything wrong with that, as long ...
