A combination of methods -Flash drive (standard name) Sep 25, 2007

I try to use a combination of methods: flash memories, CDs, DVDs and email accounts.

By the way, the old floppy disks are still alive. A customer just told me to send the translation in a floppy disk, because I'm a "composaur" and I don't rely on emails (He'll be 88 in December).

Henry "flash drive" is the standard name in the industry. Other names depend highly on the manufacturer and many are registered trademarks. In addtion to the popular term "llave maya", some other possibilites to call them are: USB flash drives, USB keys, USB memory stick, USB sticks, Jump Drives, Key Drives, Pen Drives, Thumb drives.

No doubt in the near future we'll have lots of new names for them as they become smaller and more powerful. I just bought a 2 GB Mego or DT Mini, that is smaller than my thumb.

I have an external hard drive that I update, but not every day, for lack of time. So every night I send all the files I've worked on during the day to a yahoo account. You just never know!

Pen drive or site Sep 25, 2007

Pen drives sometimes cannot be read by other pcs, still I think theyre the best, or an internet site but that for other purposes.

...and Ive always thought of pen drives as external hardware...

Removable hard drive and CDs/DVDs Sep 25, 2007

Definitely, removable hard drive media (like Iomega's REV which works best for us) and CDs and DVDs for long-term or permanent storage.

Our files are much too big for anything else!

I keep working copies of a lot of stuff in a secure place on one of my websites so I can access it worldwide even if I forget to take my CD-ROMs with me (and who wants to travel with dozens of CDs, anyway?). I prefer this to using an e-mail service (free or paid) because it's simpler and quicker: the FTP window looks and feels like Windows explorer; it can handle larger files (limited only by free web-space); it doesn't take ages while the server does unnecessary virus checks on material already known to be virus free; no hassle attaching and detaching files; etc.

External hard drive plus Acronis true image Sep 25, 2007

The new data gets backed up once a day to the external hard drive (F). I have certain data, namely figures, which I back up to it manually, separately, before I close the respective programs each time. I also back up Multiterm termbases to it separately, after adding entries.

Acronis True Image does a full back-up every Saturday night.

Astrid

External hard drive + a second computer Sep 25, 2007

I have one back-up on an external hard drive in a fireproof(ish) box and another back-up on a computer in a different building.

For me it's not just about taking back-ups, but keeping them safe. I have to admit that I am a little paranoid about fire, the reason being that not so long ago about eight businesses near here lost literally everything in a fire. I have to admit that I am a little paranoid about fire, the reason being that not so long ago about eight businesses near here lost literally everything in a fire. No-one was hurt, but the office building and the house next to it were completely destroyed - my partner was one of the firemen at the scene and said he'd never seen anything like it. However, his opinion is that in a "normal" house fire, i.e. one where most of the damage is due to smoke and water, a sturdy metal box would probably protect the contents for a reasonable length of time.

Snapshot + Server Sep 25, 2007

Since I'm using a Virtual Machine to run Windows XP in my Linux PC and laptop (both running Ubuntu,) what I actually do is create a Snapshot of Windows every morning and store it in my Linux system. So, if I get a blue screen all of a sudden on Windows, I can use that Snapshot file (that is an exact "image" of the system) to restore Windows without the need of starting from scratch (installing programs, transferring files from an external hard drive, etc.)

So, if I get a blue screen all of a sudden on Windows, I can use that Snapshot file (that is an exact "image" of the system) to restore Windows without the need of starting from scratch (installing programs, transferring files from an external hard drive, etc.)

Apart from that, we have a server with two hard drives. One of them is used for the Virtual Machine (so I can actually turn off my Linux PC anytime and the Windows Machine is still running on the server, which also allows me to connect to it using my laptop) and the other is a mirror hard drive in case the original one goes (that happened two months ago...)

In other words, if my PC explodes, my Windows Machine is still running on the server and I can go on working on my laptop after I put out the fire. I can then recover my emails (stored in Gmail) and my bookmarks (stored in Del.icio.us,). if the server explodes, then I have a Snapshot of Windows on my Linux PC that I can retrieve without any problems (emails and bookmarks will still be safe in my Linux machine.)

To further minimize any downtime, we're also setting up an external hard drive that will be a mirror of the mirror (or something like it), so if something happens to it, all we have to do is replace the bad hard drive with the one that was in the external case.

Don´t feel so old, Margareet Sep 25, 2007

Margreet Logmans wrote:

Margreet: you mean the real floppy disks? I still have a couple as a memento.

Me too. Unbelievable isn't it, that they were once state of the art.

My very first computer had a 20 MB harddrive and two diskdrives, one for 3½" and one for 5¼" diskettes. It was a fullsize desktop PC and very modern then. By comparison, these days I have a 128 MB memory stick that fits into my pocket easily. Well, I suppose that's progress, but it still amazes me to think about it....

I can remember computers with no hard drive and two disk drives. You had the software (complete) in one diskette, the other disk drive was for the diskette were you saved the files.

Regards
Marina

PS: I use a flash drive daily and CDs once a week for backup.
