Depends on the part of the world you are in too! Aug 6, 2008

Though I have voted saying it doesn't matter to me, I think the answer one gives may depend on the part of the world one finds oneself in. For example, in my part of India, summers can be quite hot (up to 45 degrees Celsius). Moreover, the frequency of power cuts ( I know this sounds quite unfamiliar to most colleagues) increases in summers - there are days when there is no electric power for as long as eight hours! Bound to affect productivity, one would think.

Summer Aug 6, 2008

In this part of the world Summer days have long daylight hours. That makes me feel I have more time in the afternoon/evening when after 7:00 p.m. we still have sunlight. Maybe that is a psychological effect but I prefer Summer to Winter.

Depends if there is a season Aug 6, 2008

Here in Britain, especially in the past two years, there is not much difference in the seasons apart from a couple of degrees. I admit that on very hot days my brain might not always work as clearly as it should but I can't remember when that happened last time.

About power failures Aug 6, 2008

This may be true for many translators. I have been thinking in purchasing a small power plant for cases of power failure. A USD$400.00 would do, but fortunately power cuts are infrequent and when they occur they are repaired in maximum two hours. I consider an invesment in a small power plant is worth the while instead of losing long working hours.

Regards,

Elías

Any time but Summer Aug 6, 2008

Summer is my least preferred season for translating because being close to the Rocky Mountains and at a higher elevation, summers in Calgary are very short. We could have snow by the end of August, so I try to enjoy summer as much as possible.

In the good old summertime Aug 6, 2008

Summer is best for me because Europe is only 4 hours ahead of Chile instead of 6 hours in the winter. This is due to daylight savings time.

I work from a building which can generate its own power Aug 6, 2008

Dear Elias,
With the kind of frequent power cuts in our region, it made more sense to move into a complex which also has its own diesel generators, and operators manning them round the clock - so that my ability to work does not depend on the availability of electric power from the main power company. One pays more maintenance charges or rent, but I think it is still well worth the expense as you have also suggested. It also means that in summers, I can use as much cooling as I need, so that it really does not make much of a difference to my ability to work whether it is summer or winter. But yes, as some other colleagues have pointed out, ones' mood can depend on the weather or season too!

Season doesn't really matter, as long as days are not (too) gloomy and the atmospheric pressure is not too low.

Winter Aug 6, 2008

Undoubtedly winter, when I feel least depressed about having to sit at my computer all day, and when I tend to get my serious 'work head' on. For me there's nothing worse than having a looming deadline whilst all your friends are out enjoying the sunshine. And let's face it, we have to get what little sunshine we can here in the UK

What about the kid factor - having kids around all summer is very nice, but I find I do less work...

Winter Aug 6, 2008

In cold St.-Petersburg winter when daylight is 4-5 hours long no other choice but to sit at the computer. But in summer I can get up earlier and do 70% of work before noon. Then the rest 30% I do till late evening.

cool Aug 6, 2008

It's hard for me to stay indoors when the weather is good.
I LOVE the autumn and spring.
In summer, it's hot, which doesn't help, but, also, my daughter is home with me, and, I'd rather go skating or to the beach with her or something...
So, in winter, there's just not a darned other thing to do but work...
And the misses usually goes home to Brasil for a month, too, so, there's not even cuddling against the cold going on...So, I just work...
