What kind? Aug 31, 2009

Do you mean a tradition of any particular kind?

I guess most families have some kind of tradition when it comes to celebrations, for example. But I'm not sure if that is what the question is referring to.

Blowing my own trumpet Aug 31, 2009

I play the trumpet (not very well). It is a family tradition that on Christmas morning I play the first few bars of "Christians Awake" on it. This year I have started practising it already, hoping to get through the whole thing.

... when I was a kid, at extended family gatherings. Almost everyone was a lawyer. Grandfather, who was a judge, would preside the table, and ever since an uncle who had married into the family made the mistake, everybody addressed him "your honor".

Living with this was what prepared me for legal translation.

The Family Stocking Aug 31, 2009

My family used to have a "Family Stocking" which alternated each year at Christmas between my family and the families of my mother's two siblings, each of us receiving it once every three years.

The stocking was filled with various small gifts, but the best part was the year's poem, which summed up major events of the year in rhyme. The poem was written on a gift card and was attached to the stocking, along with all past gift cards. The best part was reading over the previous poems

The stocking was filled with various small gifts, but the best part was the year's poem, which summed up major events of the year in rhyme. The poem was written on a gift card and was attached to the stocking, along with all past gift cards. The best part was reading over the previous poems and remembering births in the family, new jobs, moving house, and many other events small and large.

Although I don't think that the stocking tradition is altogether dead, I'm not sure if it's still circulating at regular intervals. The stocking did not follow the children when we left home; rather it remained attached to my mother, her brother, and sister.

Best,
Jocelyne

'Mousse au chocolat' Aug 31, 2009

... used to be the only acceptable dessert for each and every birthday in out family. I continued the tradition, which is still in use (even for a grown up younger generation) when we have an opportunity to celebrate a birthday together.

Easter and Christmas Eve Aug 31, 2009

I am Orthodox and according to our traditions, Christmas Eve is to be shared only with the family. The following day, December 25th, though, is to be spent with friends, relatives, etc. just to share the holiday with the whole world. Similarly, it is our national tradition to prepare a traditional Easter bread, called in Bulgarian "козунак" (reads "kozunak", stress on “A”). We could easily buy it in any supermarket or pastry shop, but I do insist on home-made kozunak at least once a year, for this special occasion. It is also our national tradition to paint eggs (normally in red, yellow, orange, blue, green) and at home it is a rule (stated by me) that I am the person entitled the right and the honour to do this. About ten years ago my mum once decided to paint these Easter eggs in order to help me and you can’t even imagine the kind of deep … (let’s say) trouble she fell in.

treasure hunts Aug 31, 2009

Every new year's eve when we were kids we had dinner with the whole extended family at our place and my mum would organise a treasure hunt for everybody , a tradition I then started for my birthday - which is gonna be in two days by the way! I always had a party in the garden and a big treasure hunt for all my friends.
With me out of the country and with the family getting older, they've given this up. However, a couple of years ago, I was here and we organised new year's dinner at my pla

With me out of the country and with the family getting older, they've given this up. However, a couple of years ago, I was here and we organised new year's dinner at my place again - my friends requested, not to say demanded, the famous treasure hunt. It was great! Like in the old days...except for the fact I forgot the treasure in the end.. ups Glad they enjoyed it anyway!!!
And can you believe it that I've just got back home again and I'm still finding little hint notes hiding in the most unthinkable places?!?...

My new family tradition when we are in Australia now is playing cricket and have a swim in the creek for Christmas and have a bonfire on the beach for new year's eve..

Xmas biscuits Aug 31, 2009

Yes! We bake Christmas biscuits!
We usually start in the first half of December and prepare many kinds of biscuits that will be gifted for Xmas to relatives and friends. This usually becomes a family engagement as everyone does something: cutting nuts, shaping biscuits, melting chocolate, pouring flour and milk... I can almost smell the kitchen's odour while writing...
But better enjoying the last Summer days before starting baking!...

birthday Aug 31, 2009

My sister's birthday and mine are within days of each other, so we go to my mother's for a Birthday dinner. It's usually something like a roast beef or a turkey with stuffing, and the special treat is her chocolate layer cake. SHe makes it specially for our birthdays. We consider ourselves privileged- wars could be fought over this cake, it's that good!
