... I dream that one day I may retire.
But back in the real world, I probably still have at least twenty years ahead of me.

I need to plan for retirement financially, since I have reached the age where in Spain decisions have to be made about pensions schemes before it's too late to increase my pension provision (I shall turn 50 next year).
My children, if they so wish, may well be at university still as I hit 65, so that's another thing to bear in mind.
And who will carry on with my other business? Will I ever find someone to take over responsibility for my language school, or will I have t... I have a private pension scheme that will allow me to retire with enough income when I am around 60.
If I had the security, I would definately retire now and have 18 hours a day more for may family!!

I just started translating professionally, so it would be quite a problem if I already wanted to retire.

The legal age for self-employed people to retire here is 65 for men and women. Anyone who decides to retire earlier loses 5% of the pension he/she saved for, per year of earlier retirement.
The only reason for which I think about retirement is that when translation will no longer HAVE to feed me, I intend to start literary translation, where payment is on a completely different basis (at least that is what I was offered so far). I think about retirement from time to time. I just turned a ripe old 48 and anyone who’s my age or older knows that 20 years can go by in the blink of an eye.
I did receive some unexpected good news recently. The US government sent a letter informing me that I had worked enough years over there to receive a small amount of social security retirement benefits when I reach 65. I did receive some unexpected good news recently. The US government sent a letter informing me that I had worked enough years over there to receive a small amount of social security retirement benefits when I reach 65. It was so out of the blue that I felt like a character in a Charles Dickens’ novel. It wasn’t exactly a fortune waiting to be inherited, but every little bit’ll help.
As for retiring and no longer working and loafing about, I can’t see myself ever doing that. I also suppose I’ll work at least part time or a few hours a week to have additional income and I'll putter about. ▲ Collapse

No, I don't think so. I love translation and the incredible knowledge I gain from it. But I would like to have enough income to be able to do other things instead of translating all the time.
I'm the type that wants to try anything and everything. My bucket list is endless!! lol

Well, I am already retired, but only SEMI-retired because I continue to work and plan to continue as long as possible. I try to take advantage of the benefits being retired while at the same time making use of my increased productivity.

More accurately, while I still have use of my brain and at least one eye and one finger, I'll keep translating. If no paying jobs come in, I'll have more time for my non-profit volunteer translation projects.

So, as many, I wish to keep doing what I love (translating) as long as possible.
With this in mind, however, it will also be nice to have a passive income that will allow me not to be working all the time when older (for instance, to be able to make some long trips and enjoy life, whatever that may mean). Which is why I signed up for a pension system from my country of origin (Belgium), called OSSOM and that anyone who doesn't live in Belgium can use. It has, at the same time, a health insurance that I can use anywhere, which is great because we are a bit "nomad". It gives me peace of mind.
We also have bought another small house with great effort, and are renting it to pay for the mortgage, but I know that this will be another source of passive income when the mortgage will be payed off and we really won't be able to work anymore... That's really when you need it, to pay for the place where you might end up living (such as assisted living facilities).
Thinking calmly and acting in advance allows us some peace of mind.

Yes, I am planning for retirement. That is to say, I plan to retire from my day job but I hope to spend more time translating and to keep on translating as long as I am physically and mentally able to.

So, yes, I think about it, but more how I could save my money for that time. And still I don´t know at which age it will be. Hopefully it will be in around, let´s say, 50 years
