Maybe the question needs to be corrected.
I taught myself touch typing when I was 10 by covering the keys of the typewriter with adhesive tape. It was the smartest thing I ever did.

I'm supposed to be the author of this poll, but I don't know what the question means. I remember to have suggested a poll about how many fingers you use when translating. Perhaps someone at Proz edited that poll and the result is here. Or than I was out of my mind when I suggested this poll.
Sorry about this confusion!
Bad luck, my last poll had to be abandoned because the answering system did not work properly.

It's incredible how one is often unable to identify one's own polls when they finally come out. It happened to me too, Heinrich. The edited question was so different than the original one that I was hardly able to recognize it!

So I'll not answer the poll, I'll answer here, Heinrich:
I don't use all 10 fingers, I use mostly 2 fingers, the index ones, with a little help from the thumbs and little fingers, maybe from the middle fingers too from time to time (I think the ring fingers don't participate, but I'll have to check! )

Presumed it meant touch-typing, which I don't.
Never having learnt to touch type, or even "normal" type, I use at least 2 fingers and (horror of horrors) quite often look at the keyboard while typing.
I can still do 2000 words a day or 5000 at a pinch, depending on the source text...

I had to learn to type blindly in school: Our teacher simply put a piece of paper over the keyboard which also covered your hands. This way you had to remember which finger goes with which keys. I know of some teachers who even switched off the monitor, too.
Now, this comes in handy as I have an English keyboard but with German settings on my laptop.
But I don't mind as I simply don't look down - except for when I am looking for some rarely used characters.
Well, this will be ending soon - I hope - as I just ordered Dragon Naturally Speaking at half the price via ProZ. ▲ Collapse
