I do not believe that there are any economies of scale in our business, so I see no justification for offering discounts for large volumes.

I agree with Tim. At any rate, large projects probably involve more work than small ones, especially in terms of revision.

But if somebody offers me a large-scale job with a generous deadline that can be fitted in around other work, I tend to be more tempted than if somebody wants to book me out for a week or two, which can be detrimental to my relationship with other clients.

I agree there. I have done discounts in return for generous deadlines.

Large projects involve no economies of scale, they are boring, they involve a lot of revision and harmonization, they prevent you from taking on other jobs... Plus they involve a higher financial risk.
In any case, I don't take large projects. My favourite projects are the ones running from one day to one week, I rarely accept projects keeping me busy more than 2 weeks.

I did once, a long time ago, and while working on it, I had to refuse several other jobs
I mostly have longer projects (from 10 to 250 pages)... should I be working at a discount rate all the time? No way!

i did once or twice, early on. Large projects mean more investment of time, preventing you from taking most other jobs. If i have to devote my time to it, then i look at it as isolation pay.
I usually don't like to take very large projects for translation (proofreading is ok).

I don't mind working on larger projects, and in most cases my usual rates apply. But I have in the past agreed upon a somewhat lower rate sometimes, but only for regular and trustworthy clients.

I don't offer discounts for large projects. Same reasons as already mentioned - it's not necessarily less work, so I can't see the rationale for less money.
However, I have agreed to a lower rate just a couple of times in the past when asked by an agency (two different agencies). The rate was still acceptable and so I agreed. Looking back, I'm not sure that I should have though, since that probably just encourages agencies to agree to bulk discounts to end clients. End clients ...
