First of all, my brain, my eyes, and my neck! Then, I get swollen legs – especially in the heat – when I sit for too long.

Brain damage Dec 18, 2023

My brain feels tired after a hard day's work. My eyeballs feel stingy, and my lower legs feel heavy in the summer as well.
My back, shoulders and neck may be better preserved thanks to a gamer's chair, voice recognition and my aversion to taking on ultra-trail-like stints.

Work in all its forms is the bane of mankind. We're not architected to sit like idiots all day, but to lie and sometimes get up and run to the fridge.

I wanted to vote for "more or less all of the above".
I mean, my brain obviously gets worn out after a day of thinking hard.

I do take precautions to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, using an ergonomic mouse and mouse pad, after a nasty bout of tendonitis a while back.
Sitting at a desk all day is not good for my circulation, especially my legs, which is why I got a dog: I have to take him out for good long walks every day.

Which part of your body tends to be affected the most as a result of working hard?

Assuming the question refers to working hard AT TRANSLATION, the part of me that gets most affected is my brain. I get mentally tired and lose concentration.

Other physical effects are minimal due to having resolved all issues relating to lighting, computer, computer display, keyboard seating, etc. None of these are a problem for me. I used to suffer from overuse injury but I've eliminated it by using dictation and keeping typing to a minimum.

I do suffer from Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyes) but it isn't work-related and can be kept under control using wipes, of which I keep a supply beside my workstation.

More generally I have some mild vision impairment but with the correct glasses this is not a prob.

And that's enough about my moans. Basically, translation is not physically demanding for me, but becomes mentally demanding if I'm working hard. But I LOVE translating so my main experience is pleasure and interest.

My back Dec 19, 2023

My back is in bad conditions, I have now scoliosis and 3 slipped disc. My brain is good for now, but I am also going to have a surgery (tomorrow) at my eyes.

Good luck with the surgery. At some point I will also need it (cataract).

Eyes mostly Dec 19, 2023

I'm not sure if it is time for a new pair of glasses or if I just need to rest my eyes more often, but my impression is that they suffer the most.
I also fear some lasting brain damage every time I read, translate and/or try to comprehend buzzword-riddled marketing/corporate nonsense.

I'm surprised Dec 19, 2023

I'm surprised everyone's complaining about brain fatigue in the 21st century, when all of you can simply use AI or GPT.

In my case I get an occasional eye strain, and sometimes wrist pain, but the wrist injury dates back from a ski trip and sometimes it likes to remind me it happened one time in the past.

Hands down, I would actually fear for the integrity of my brain if my work consisted of reviewing/proofreading AI nonsense rather than producing my own translation work.

I've just tried to do that with a recent translation. The ChatGPT translation *looked* right until I read it more carefully alongside the source text. The end result, after 3 days of rewriting, is very different from what ChatGPT did.

Some things ChatGPT doesn't understand are flow and style, allusion, and deliberate obscurantism by the person who wrote the source text using infinitely long sentences riddled with qualifying phrases, unpunctuated.

All except my back.
My eyes need glasses, my wrist and fingers need an ergonomic mouse+pad, my brain and legs need to go for a good long walk every day (luckily my dog makes sure I don't skip that), and I still miss my dear friend Alan who gave the best neck and shoulder massages ever. I wouldn't know how to rate the impact of work on each body part, and I'm not complaining because I reckon I'm in pretty good health for my age.

Good luck Angie with your operation tomorrow!
