becuase they normally have additional index function that makes the search easy. Additionally I am for saving the trees and ecology. But there are also some very specialized rare dictionaries, especially the old ones (20-30 years back) where the publishing houses do not exist anymore (I know a couple of these from England) , paper dictionaries are a better option.Brandis

because 1) Its a traditional practice. 2) The big paper dictionaries on my table adjecent to the PC makes me feel doing something great and unusual. I feel being a scholar.

The online dictionaries that I use (e.g., Dorland's Medical Dictionary) are organized so that, once I've got the dictionary up on the screen, I then have to click on a letter, then a subset of that letter, and then find the word. Assuming that I have the same information on a shelf in my office, it's quicker for me to find it manually (from working in a library, I learned how to find things in alphabetical order very fast). For now at least, I don't intend to replace my dictionaries with CDs or ... I DO like to search for and use specialized glossaries on the Internet, where Google brings the term up right away. But that's because they are teeny files compared with real dictionaries. ▲ Collapse

I love electronic dictionaries because of the convenience of the "search" option.
Nevertheless, it depends on the format of the dictionary (I like the ones where all the info appears alphabetically and HATE the ones that you write a keyword and hope that what you need appears -and it appears all by itself!)

It is also important to be able to verify the quality of the dictionary used. Of course, when you purchase a CD from a known company, this is no problem. But with dictionaries on the internet you always have to be wary of the quality, who wrote it, what are it's sources, how much of it is just "plagiarising" some other dictionary (or others), etc.
And the problem is that sometimes it is very tempting to use unverified information (which sometimes is worse than just guessing...)
But I also love my paper dictionaries, having them all around me in my office.
Actually, I still prefer to use my regular paper bilingual language dictionary and only use electronic ones for more specialized information...

I think programs or CD's are better. They save time. But, unfortunately for some language pairs (as say for Russsian/Bulgarian) there are no electronic dictionaries. That's why sometimes I have no choice - I have to use paper dictionaries.

when i want to look up a single word of phrase i know is in one of my dictionaries i usually pick the paper version. however, when i'm working on a larger text i would rather use online dictionaries...

CD dictionaries are clearly superior because of speed and mobility (try carrying five or six 5-pound dictionaries in a suitcase, for example). The problem, of course, is that not all of the dictionaries, specialized or not, are available on CD, as already mentioned by the gentlemen from Bulgaria. Quality is an issue whether paper or CD.

When time is key, I prefer my CDs or on-line dictionaries, but if I can choose (=there are no time limitations) I prefer paper dictionaries.
My rationale covers a wide array of reasons: from pragmatic ones to romantic reasons.
The romantic ones first. I LOVE my dictionaries, I enjoy touching them (smelling them!), I sometimes add comments on their margins, I put post-its to highlight whole sections. Some of my dictionaries have been with me for 20 years (ok, these ones will not help me with the word 'VoIP' I know, I know their limitations, mainly as far as technology is concerned; sometimes I need to reflect on timeless words, though...and they are there to help me.)
Also, as all of you, I have my own system to translate. I go over the same documents many many times: the first phase has nothing to do with terminological investigation (unless a certain word stops me). In the second phase I usually try to get a macrovision of my work (ideas). Usually in the third phase I start working on words. In that moment, I prefer to leave my PC, take my paper dictionaries, put them on a table and dive into them. Sometimes a word does not help, but one of its neighbours will (you know what I mean). This temporary separation from my PC is most welcome by my eyes and my back.
Come to think of it, my 'phases' look like the so-called TAP.

Take German, for example. There are lots of lovely compound words, like the famous
Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän (I just love the 3 effs in this one)
Wohnraummodernisierungssicherungsgesetz
The possibility of looking up parts of these words in a CD dictionary can't be beaten.

But I LOVE paper dictionaries. It's the book, the touch of the papers, and the smell of the cover. It's the beautiful printing and amazing images here and there all over the pages. It's something I can actually touch and see and smell ... something I can feel ... It's a BOOK!

Old Chinese verb: when you work with a machine, you become a machine.
When I read a book, paper or so and I want to look up something, I want to use the Ctrl + F buttons. But ... they're nowhere to find.
