The damage! Mar 24, 2006

Too many hours in front of the computer. In rare cases, such as having a weekend off (ha, good one...), they seem to recover.

corrected or uncorrected? Mar 24, 2006

The poll should specify because there can be a dramatic difference between the two!

I have been wearing glasses since I was 9 and have had some serious retinal problems but my eyesight is 15/20 with glasses
(better than average)

How should I respond?

Not perfect, but good Mar 24, 2006

I've worn glasses since the age of 6 because I'm nearsighted. I thought it was a terrible disability but I gradually got used to it and now I bless it.

After I turned age of 40 people have been amazed when I pull off my glasses to read. No, no reading glasses nor bifocals for me, just take off the glasses; all day before the computer, no glasses; perfect vision for everything close.

It's a good thing I'm a translator, it really helps.

add to that no sense of direction and reduced depth perception Mar 24, 2006

I'm very short-sighted and have constant problems finding my way about. I also failed my driving test six times before finally throwing in the towel and realising I would never be a safe driver. If it weren't for signposts and maps I don't know how I would dare leave the house! On the plus side I have an uncanny ability to remember most things I read, words have always been my friend.

Myopia Mar 24, 2006

I wear contact lenses, both eyes at -8,5. On top of that, I have astigmatism (-1,25 on the right, -1,75 on the left).

But honestly, the "dammages" were there way before I started translating (i.e. staring at my computer screen all day). So I cannot accuse my job of anything! Even better, my vision hasn't changed one bit for the last 4 years, which is the amount of years I've been translating...

Short-sighted Mar 24, 2006

I am short-sighted and wear contact lenses. My prescription at the moment is -2.75 in both eyes, but my eyes tend to get worse every time I visit my optician (which is annually). I've been told that this is quite common and usually people's eyesight "settles" in their mid 20s (I'm 25!). Hopefully this time I won't need anything stronger.

My contacts are fortnightly disposables, specially designed to stop the eyes from drying out, especially when staring for long hours at the computer screen. They are great, and I very infrequently suffer from any discomfort. And if I do, I just wear my glasses for a while.

I'm myopic Mar 24, 2006

I started to wear glasses at the age of 10 and, exactly, my myopia progressed steadily until the age of 24-25 when it stopped at last at the value of -7,0 right eye and -8,0 left eye. There's some astigmatism (but negligible) in the right eye, too. So, no change in the eyesight for the past 15 years (cheer up, Rebecca!), but I have to undergo regular, detailed examination every 6 months or so because I'm under constant threat of glaucoma. a little tip Mar 24, 2006

Human beings were made for hunting mammoth and not sitting in front of a computer so evey 10-15 minutes look out of the window as far as you can. That was an optician said to the daughter of one of my friends when she went to purchase her glasses.
I was really short sighted and had a lasik operation and it really changed my life for sports specially.

fine with glasses Mar 24, 2006

I've been wearing glasses or contact lenses since the age of 10 (nearsightedness and astigmatism), and had to make the switch to progressive lenses a couple years ago. But I can see fine with my glasses...

Lasik did miracles for me Mar 24, 2006

I had -5.0 on both eyes, but about 1.5 years ago I underwent a lasik eye surgery and have a normal eyesight since than. This was probably the best decision I took in my life as after the lasik I feel better than ever.

Hi Rita - the poll I suggested was based on corrected eyesight, but it seems to have been edited before being posted.

Me - I've been wearing glasses since I was 6 (straightforward but severe myopia), and my prescription had been stable since the age of 15, until at age 26, after several years of doing jobs that involved intensive computer work (including translation), my prescription was found to have worsened.

I consider my eyesight to be perfect with correction, but poor when uncorrected.
