50-60 when I work but the annual average will amount to 40 or less.

The question is not quite clear Oct 14, 2006

The answer would still be "over 60", whatever is meant. I assume that is normal for a self-employed person whose sole income is derived from translating. However, I would be interested to know what is meant here by "work". Is it the number of hours spent on translating and proofreading that is being asked, or the total work involved in the business? Full-time translating creates quite a lot of administrative and book-keeping work each week.

'Work' as apposed to 'spare time' Oct 14, 2006

I suppose 'work' is meant as the opposite of 'spare time' here and should include everything from actual translation/proofreading work to bookkeeping, looking for new customers, updating your CV etc.

Still tricky to work out (at least for me) - gonna have to have a think about this one.

I see that some translators have said they have 50 or more hours of work per week. They should consider themselves the luckiest people in the world!

I would very much like to have a workload of at least 40 hours a week, but I find it very difficult to find work and I normally have to make do with 20 hours or even less. Another trick is that these hours include interpretation work, actually the latter makes at least 60% of my total, some weeks - a 100%. Diversity helps to ensure better workload, and I'm not so sure I would want to keep the pace of 50-60 hours a week just translating at the computer, even for 1 straight month.

At the initial stage of my career I was less concerned about a healthy balance but now I do, a lot.

12 hours and average!! Oct 16, 2006

I cannot do translation at an average of 60 hours per week. If I do, it would be only for one week and then next week I have to take rest. Now the average would come down to just 30 hours!! I remember translating 10 hours or more daily in the beginning and then I felt walking in a different world.
