I take a break at noon in order to cook and eat. I also take another brake at 5.00 p.m. so that I can take my dog for a stroll. But sometimes when I have to much work to do my poor little dog have to wait till night... so I end up having only one break!

A series of many short breaks to breathe in peace, stretch and flex the muscles, take a cup of coffee, and go on. Really short breaks, not longer than 5 minutes.
The only way to stand loooooong working journeys - or nights - or weekends.

I think taking lots of little breaks (10 mins or so) and then a slightly longer break (maybe an hour or so) at lunch and dinner is a good idea. I always know when it is tme to stop and take a short break, even two minutes away from the computer screen is long enough to rest your eyes for a minute and to refresh you enough to then sit down and start focusing again. Starring at a screen for too long is not good for your eyes or your body!

It is very important to rest at least 10 minutes every hour. That is great and helps you to relax for a while. Your brain needs it! I know that sometimes we are so concentrated on our work that it is difficult to realize how much we need a rest. But believe me, it is worth trying...

Usually I take a break every 1-2 hours, mostly a short trip to fetch some coffee and wiggle my shoulders and other stiff muscles. Preferably a three-minute run behind the house or up the hill two or three times a day. I have no dog...

I take a break whenever I'm stuck in a word or a sentence, when my back hurts, when I need to stretch my legs, when I'm hungry and go grab something bad for my health... I take many short breaks, 5 to 15 minutes... just till the guilt bell rings in my head.

I am suffering from increasingly severely eyesight problems, and one of the few things I can do to help is to take frequent short breaks. Unfortunately, this ends up lengthening my working day, so I am quite often working between 8 am and midnight, though of course, not continually!
Sometimes it gets so bad that I ca no longer see the screen; I am actually very worried about what is going to happen to me in the future when I can no longer work ... Dictation software is all very well, but wouldn't be suited to my way of working, and I suspect also not very ergonomic for pages with lots of layout etc.
And as for printing out source pages to read from in larger fonts, I'd need an A3 printer, which for the moment I can't afford.
Are there any other colleagues out there with serious sight problems? ▲ Collapse
