to use a favourite phrase of my middle school headmaster. To the untrained eye my office is a mess, but I know where everything is (unless, of course, my 4 year old daughter has managed to get over the safety gate again!!) Don't stick a hand in there, you might get bitten! I save all my organizational skills for getting the work done. My filing system is "wherever it falls, that's where it stays". No one else is allowed to touch anything. Not that they would even want to...

I keep it clean and tidy. | Sep 3, 2007 |
I really can’t work if my workspace is not tidy and clean. I prefer spending 10 minutes to organize my staff than start working and getting angry because of the mess. Best, Fernando | | | I'm Like Catherine and Henry | Sep 3, 2007 |
I'm like you, Catherine and Henry. To the untrained, uninformed eye, my workplace looks like a mess. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes me way too long to find what I'm looking for under the stack of original manuscripts, important phone no.s, etc. But I work so much, I rarely have time to organize and file completed projects away (twice a year, at most). My mother has offered to come over and help-maybe I should take her up on it?

Especially during massive work days/weeks... the pages just keep on piling on the desk(s). Originals and the respective translations to proofread... I don't throw anything away until finishing the whole job. Nasty habit... but it's the only way I proofread adequately. Cheers, Ricardo
After discovering the hard way that I am too old to keep typing on my laptop keyboard for huge translations, I have made some investments. The 22" widescreen is the best. And there is no paper on my desk - just some manuals in the drawer. I throw things out once they are proofread.

The first thing I did when I moved into my current house was to decorate my office - a nice calming soft yellow, with light maple furniture and deep red chair and curtains for a splash of contrast. It still makes me feel good whenever I go in and that's pretty important when you spend all day in there! I have plants and nice pictures plus all the usual work stuff, books, etc, but it's usually pretty tidy. My children will tell you that I'm far too obsessed with tidiness, but that's how I am.... ... Oh and the dogs have their day beds in there too, so there's usually at least two relaxed bodies in the room even if I'm stressed up to the limit!

My office is a little chaotic too, but it is like a sunroom and I look out onto a lovely garden. There is a well-used bird bath quite close, and I can watch the birds while I work. | | | Boris Kimel Israel Local time: 21:58 English to Russian + ...
No other option fits. And yes, I do throw things away. In larger portions. Can anyone tell me what this Scotch tape is for here? Ah, there'd be a lot of things to do for an interior designer. I just do not let one in. | | | A scary chaotic but functional workplace | Sep 4, 2007 |
In addition to unfinished projects, I have to add those projects I haven't had time to invoice. In my country we have to use "stamped" invoices (that is, IRS-approved invoices), which must be filled in paper forms. Electronic invoices are not valid, please, add copies of invoices to my papers. Some exams and materials for my classes, teacher's manuals for every book I use at the University (in some cases three books per course). Of course my TV set, CD player and CD collection, scanner, printers, fax machine, lots of dictionaries, grammar books... The good point, I know exactly where everything is. Nobody is allowed to even attempt organizing it. Not even myself since it takes me a whole day cleaning my mess and less than hour to going back to my "normal" disorder. Above all the things, what I love the most is the scale John Deere tractor I have on top of my monitor. I really love tractors. ▲ Collapse

Functional, relaxing (when there's a cat or two or the desk), inspiring (when there's a cat's belly begging to be stroked) and untidy. Not chaotic, just a moderate amount of mess. | | | Lisa Roberts France Local time: 20:58 Spanish to English + ...
