Wow.. Oct 29, 2009

.., way more than half of the pollers have lived in more than one country. Here's me thinking my situation is somewhat special.

3

The Netherlands
Germany
Canada

Stayed in France for several months on several occasions, but my French still sucks.

So, what do you think: is the globetrotting a natural consequence of being a translator/interpreter or is is the other way around?

For me it's a bit of both. The move to Germany was job-related, but had nothing to do with language services; teaching languages to adults and then translation came much later.

The move to Canada, 4 years ago, became possible because of my translator qualifications and the Internet.

Thanks for a great poll!

For me it is also a bit of both, but for different reasons.
I was always interested in language and languages. I studied to become a journalist; in other words, to work with words. But then I never actually worked for the media. I did all sort of things, always related to languages in some way, and emigrated to Canada, where I started my first attempts at translation, and where I met my husband, whose job involves periodic relocations. Once I realized we would be traveling all over, it also dawned on me that translation, in this age of Internet and communications, was the perfectly "portable" carrier, and I completely plunged into it.

Right now we're living in Belfast and we are both very happy here. Don't want to leave again!!

Last month I reached a halfway point in life. I was born and lived in the US until I was 24. I've lived in in Spain for the last 24 though. The scale has now tipped towards having lived more of my life in the latter, but I wouldn't mind adding a third country to the list. If one of my children was to move to another country in the future, I'd consider moving there to be with them.

Actually, that comes with a condition; it would depend on whether I liked the climate in the country they moved to. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of giving up sunny Spain for a cold northern climate like the one I grew up in.

Argentina (Buenos AIres, first 31 years)
Spain (Barcelona, past 7.5 years)
+ frequent trips to Scotland for 3-5 weeks at a time, 2-3 times per year in the last 6 years.

I would love to live in France, but there is no real reason for us to move there, except improving our French or getting a nice, big, old house, the kind you can't really get in Spain. And I think the kids would hate it. My dear hubby, I think, would love to go back to sunny Scotland, but I'm not terribly

By the way, he has lived in more than five countries but he never answers these polls, hehe.
