Yes, only how? Jan 19, 2007

I would like it, but don't imagine how to do it, because there are so many language pairs.
Which field, which languages?
I would suggest: field - literature (no poems!) For languages: from the most common into a few national, perhaps on the non-English fora.
I don't know if all important languages have non-English forum (thinking of the Indian people).

Prizes Jan 19, 2007

Would there be any prizes involved? This would make it more appealing for many translators

I would love it Jan 19, 2007

Seems like I have a different opinion.
I would love to participate in such a thing. It would be fun and we would be learning at the same time.
I find the idea truly interesting!
About prizes, like Diana mentioned, I agree, but not prizes in money. I would prefer to receive prizes related to our job as translators, like software, trips to conferences abroad, preference in applying for some jobs, among many other things.
This would be a challenge and a opportunity to show

Speed Translation Contest Jan 19, 2007

This is what I can think of:

Speed Translation Contest

Condition to win: Those who can translate a word or two or a phrase correctly and the fastest, win!

Category: By language pair and by connection type and by time zone.

All participating members must state their connection type to the Internet, Dial-up, DSL etc.

Each type will be the participating member of that category and language pair.

Proz.com or volunteers to provide list of one or two words/phrase to be contested in certain pairs of language.

Randomly, or say during the day, these questions will be sent to all participating members.
Those who can answer it correctly and within the shortest time possible. Wins.

Confused??? Let's just say its like a Kudoz competition. Those who answer the first, with maximum confident level and gets approval from the other wins. No Browniz this time. A Laptop would do! Those who approve the answer a browniz or two would be happy.

Well I hope this will provoke more creative ideas!

"Would you like to have fun"? Jan 19, 2007

I'm sure we all like to have as much fun as possible, no matter what we do?

Or do you mean "Would you like take part in a translation contest just for the fun of it"?

Or maybe:
"Would you enjoy taking part in a contest"?

Questions, questions...

I think I agree with Tim and Giovanni that I have more fun when I'm not translating than when I am!

However, if the site management has some extra prizes to give away, why not reward active contributors to the site?
There could be a draw for prizes as follows:

Trip to Budapest - those with more than 500 KudoZ points

Laptop - those with more than 4000 BrowniZ

CAT tool - those with more than 200 forum posts

Just a thought.....

who's the judge? Jan 19, 2007

Irene said it...who's the judge?

Based on my past experience in kudoz (more than 4 years), I daresay that we rarely agree on what the exact translation should be.

Therefore, I responded NO to the poll. This field involves a high level of subjectivity, in addition to regional variations; I do not think it is fun to argue with my respected colleagues.

If my clients are satisfied, that is test enough for me.

My resolution for 2007 is to work harder for peace in the world and competitivity does not seem to be the best way IMO.

I cannot agree more! We can barely make ends meet in 24 hours in KudoZ entries and there's always lots of controversy and tension about many questions... so for this type of contest the translations would have to be very very very simple or completely undisputable.

In the case of Spanish things get worse as there are so many different ways of referring to the same thing in the different countries...

Yes, it would be perfect...but Jan 19, 2007

What kind of fun time it could be?

I think that we need more information about the full idea. I can't imagine the purpose.

It could be a particular incentive and opportunity for beginners Jan 19, 2007

For example, it should consist of only one paragraph, or two paragraphs, and all entries should be visible to everyone on the site. We would all be the judges, by being able to click a link and vote for the best one in each category.

It would give some publicity to new translators and the chance to publicly demonstrate their skills. In this respect (as seasoned translators could enter as well), there should probably be different competition categories for those who have been in the business under a year, under 3 years, over 10 years, over half a century, or whatever.

Prizes should be modest, but sufficient to create an incentive.

Good idea on the whole.

Astrid

P.S. There should, of course, be an automatic function to disqualify people from voting in a class/category in which they have put in an entry.
